settled by the local Game Warden or Con-
stable. There being no Game Warden this
duty was mine, so I decided that the best
way to settle disputes was not to have any,

and when a trapper applied for his licence
I had him describe the location of his line,
which I marked out on a map and set down
in a book. This system of mine was the fore-
runner of a present method of registering
trap lines, and I believe I was the first one

them and the majority did their hunting
and trapping on the north side of the Peace
River.

to bring it into practice. By adopting this
method there were very few disputes to
settle, as the only ones that arose were when
Indians returned to lines that they had run
some years previously and found they had
been taken up by white trappers. The In-
dians of that country had been allowed to
trap and hunt without any restrictions and
they would camp in a location and kill off
the game within a radius of about twenty
miles, then move camp to another site and
repeat the action. This is a typical Indian
way of doing things, as they have no ideas
of conserving game, or anything else, so
when they returned to a locality where
licenced trappers were operating I had to
explain the law to them and request them
to move to some other hunting ground fur-
ther afield. This was not always to their
liking, but there was plenty of room for
