The ‘open pit’ mining method was selected in 1953 for the Com- pany’s mine at Cassiar, B.C. Be- cause the ore body dips into the mountain millions of tons of waste must be removed every year. At Cassiar and Clinton Creek waste and ore is prepared for blasting by rotary drills which produce nine inch holes for explosives. Shovels and front end loaders are used to load waste and ore into 50 to 85 ton capacity trucks. Cassiar’s new tramline is 15,370 feet long and travels 600 feet per minute. Its 140 buckets can automatically load and deliver 300 tons of ore per hour from mine to mill. 3
