enclosed to form the rattle. The specimen shown in Figure 7 is relatively simply carved with a human face, whereas Figure 8 bears an elaborate design of the Horned Owl. The obverse of the rattle is selected for this illustration because it shows a very typical type of Tsimsyan art in the surround of small faces; here the eight faces are alternately full and in profile. The design purports to be the bird's tail; the central portion symbolizes a skull.
