Since January 2008, I have been the Acting First Nations Representa- tive for NUGSS, as well as a Peer Counsellor with the Peer Support Net- work at the First Nations Centre. In this role, I have worked closely with the current Vice President- External Affairs in order to facilitate better rela- tions between outside or- ganizations and NUGSS. I will also be a part of the NUGSS annual regional campus tour where the Vice President-External Affairs visits regional campuses such as Terrace and Prince Rupert. I was a Resident As- sistant for two years and helped organize fun events for students living in Rez. I hope to use my experience with NUGSS and other outside organ- izations to further con- tribute to campus life. As this will be an important year for UNBC students with the opening of the Student Centre, I feel that I can use my experience to make the transition as smooth as possible. With your support, I am running for Vice Pres- ident-External Affairs on March 5th and 6th be- cause I want to continue my ongoing hard work at NUGSS. ELyse E.mMsvue News RUNNING FoR VP EXTERNAL My name is Elyse Elmslie and I am cur- rently in my 3rd year as a Finance Major. I have chosen to declare my candidacy in the NUGSS Election for the position of Vice President of External Affairs. I have chosen this position as its requirements are a great fit to my personality and capabilities. These requirements include communicating and encouraging positive relations between NUGSS and other student organizations, and also with other organizations within the community and surrounding areas. My effective communication skills and my ap- proachability will help to build strong rela- tions between these groups and NUGSS. Throughout the past month I have. been getting more familiarized with the NUGSS Policies and the different Executive and Associate positions. I have taken the op- portunity to speak with the current VP of External Affairs to discuss his position and his role with NUGSS. I have also had the opportunity to do some job shadowing that has allowed me to further observe and fully understand the daily activities of the VP of External Affairs. My extensive efforts to become further familiarized with NUGSS and its operations have vastly benefited my ability to more than effectively carry out the duties that are expected of the VP of External Affairs. I will to provide NUGSS with a fresh face, creative ideas and a new perspec- tive. Effective communication is essential for building strong relationships between NUGSS and other student organizations; media; federal and provincial political rep- resentatives; and the UNBC undergraduate student body. I posses these communica- tion skills and will carry out the role to the best of my abilities. The NUSC building will be completed next fall and this will be an exciting time of growth for NUGSS and UNBC. As your student body repre- sentative, I would ensure that the growth NUGSS experiences is facilitated through the effective external relationships | forge. Iam a friendly and approachable individ- ual that truly values the needs and opinions of others and I am very excited to have this opportunity to get further involved. I thank you for your support and I encourage all of you to come watch the campaign speeches held in the Wintergarden on March 4th. This event will allow you to become ac- quainted with each of the candidates and our visions with NUGSS. I am currently finishing my second year at UNBC. The position I am running for is VP Social. I would be a successful candidate for this pos- ition as I could bring new ideas and different events to the school. I would like to work towards including everyone and have already started to do this by building relation- ships with different clubs and students around campus. I am very organized and VP social best fits my personal- ity. In this upcoming year, if I am chosen VP Social I will dedicate much of my time to bringing UNBC some of the most amazing events this school has ever seen. Throughout the course of this year I have been the VP Social for the BC Young Liberals. I have planned many social events such as bowling, pizza nights at Boston Pizza, Cougars games, Spruce Kings games, pub nights, Premier’s dinner, trips to Quesnel, spirit at the basketball games and workshops. Recently I have worked with BCY'L in planning a trip to Victoria for the 2008 Convention. A recent accomplishment is that the President and I arranged flights to Victoria instead of bussing and were able to have the flight cost covered for all members. Also during the school year I was involved with CSS and other clubs in planning several events. I assisted in organizing the Christmas party, and the Jump Off Parties. also helped designed tickets for the Coyote Ugly Party. I have also been involved in sitting at tables selling tickets and carefully recording each ticket sold. At these events I have worked at the door collecting and selling tickets. Furthermore I have helped with the marketing aspect of putting out flyers and posters that are appropriate for the school. By working at these events I have acquired con- tacts from different companies. Runnine FoR VP Socia Hi everyone! My name is James De Vuyst and I’m seeking your support for my re- election bid for the Vice President-Social position. I have been with NUGSS for two years; first as the Member at Large, and now in my current position as Vice Pres- ident-Social. I’m going into my 4th year at UNBC, with a double major in Marketing and Finance. For the past 2 years, I have dedicated much of my time to NUGSS and UNBC, and this year has been no different. I have worked hard creating new events, policies, and working with other groups on campus to improve three key areas which I believe are lacking within our school: pro- motion, campus culture, and innovation. I offer you, the students of UNBC, hard work and dedication, and most of all experience with NUGSS matters. I believe that with your vote, I will continue to bring new and exciting events to campus, making your ex- perience here at UNBC the best it can be. Promotion: -Compiling mailing list of club Presidents because 85 per cent of UNBC students are in a club therefore reaching a vast majority of students. -Increased use of Facebook groups more effectively, thereby creating UNBC events pages open to everyone. -Dedicated events board in the new North- ern University Student Centre. Campus Culture: -Your University experience is based around this idea and by creating a more positive campus culture, student involve- ment and interest on campus will continue to grow. -Continue working with internal organiz- ations to better improve events that benefit all students. -Creating ‘core events’ that occur weekly or bi-weekly. This will lay the foundation for other events on campus and provide a constant entertainment factor that is miss- ing for students. Innovation: -Using the newly-formed Events Plan- ning Committee, complied of students, to generate fun, positive ideas. I will also propose a MUGSS member have a seat on EPC, thereby increasing the voice for ma- ture students, who have previously been under-represented on campus. -If elected I will bring live entertainment back on campus bi-weekly, with the cre- ation of the “NUGSS Concert Series.’ -New acquisition of movie license, al- lowing clubs to charge for movies as means of fundraising, as well as NUGSS weekly movie nights. -Events space in NUSC will feature a ‘Clubs Night,” allowing them to use the space FREE of charge, in order to fundraise for their club.
