Over the Edge + October 6, 2010 features How to Become a Good Public Speaker It’s about more than just talking ECATERINA CIUGUREANU FEATURES EDITOR If you have public speaking anxiety, maybe these tips can help. The men mentioned on the list are very different, but they do have one thing in common: public speaking was their strong suit. 1. Come up with a catchy tag-line Obama lovers, this is for YOU. Barack’s slogan “Yes, we can” got him the votes, not to mention a hit song by Will.l.Am. Big statements lead to big results. 2. Write speeches like song lyrics Have you ever heard a Malcolm X speech? His speeches flow like poetry and have the repetition, the sort of chorus, of song lyrics. As the popular saying goes, it is not just what you say, it is how you say it. When a speech is so well thought out and has this kind of structure it is easy to follow and a pleasure to listen to. 3. It’s all about confidence “History will absolve me.” 1953. Fidel Castro uttered these words in court in his defence. He could have just been arrested and rotted in jail for 15 years, instead he propelled himself into the public’s heart as a leader people can rely on. 4. Use humour Apparently Winston Churchill was hilarious. Who knew? He cracked so many jokes in speeches, you would think he is auditioning for Saturday Night Live. Most of them were at other people’s expense, by the way. Socialists, my heart goes out to you. Try reading one of his speeches and each time the word “laughter” is transcribed in square brackets, take a drink. | bet you will be hammered by the end of the speech. 5. Use the word “revolution” as often as possible Seems like a fool proof word. Malcolm X argued for the Black Revolution in his speeches, while Che Guevara promoted 10. the World Revolution in his. If things get awkward, just yell it out or something. Embed emotions Hitler once said “I use emotion for the many and reserve reason for the few.” While he was a horrible human being, the public loved him because of his speeches. All of the yelling, fist pumping (which we will discuss later), and all-or-nothing attitude really gets a crowd hyped up, you know? Now, let’s not all get offended at once. A common enemy is the ultimate uniting force Jamie Foxx (not the best public speaker in the world) said blame it on a-a-a-a-alcohol. Churchill blamed it on Socialism. Che Guevara blamed it on capitalism. If all goes wrong during your public speech, | am sure one of these 3 will strike a chord with your audience. Whatever Nelson Mandela does, do that too | hope you have had the privilege to read the “our biggest fear is not that we are inadequate” quote. | guess his trick is being (or at least seeming ) so incredibly genuine and amazing. | know | recommended yelling and finger pointing, but never underestimate eloquence either, Let your body talk It doesn’t even need to be your body. How about Kruschchev’s show banging incident? A-ma-zing. Sure he was removed by his own colleagues, but his show has its own Wikipedia page. Great success. Inspire | was saving him for last. Hint. He had a dream. Martin Luther King’s words had impact. His famous speech is now considered the greatest American speech of the 20" century. The whole thing about words being empty is a misconception, so make yours count too.
