December 2 2002 Over The Edge Page 7 Andrew Retains Number One Ranking on UNBC Ping Pong Circuit By Austin Nairn It had been almost a month since UNBC’s last ping pong tournament which saw Andrew Lui beat Kenneth in a heroic battle for school bragging rights. This tournament was long overdue and although attendance was down all the big hitters were out to play. The word on the street was that Bibo Chee would be the one to take it as he could not participate in the last tourna- ment and was itching at a chance to take on Andrew. Bibo would have his chance in the semi finals but despite a valiant effort he could not defeat the number one seeded Andrew. Andrew had strug- gled in his first match where he lost to Craig Johnson, a rel- atively new face in UNBC Ping Pong. Due to the double knockout tournament style Andrew would get another chance to play Craig in the finals. Andrew ended up tak- ing Craig two games to noth- ing in the finals in a grueling 6 minute match. Unfortunately this tournament was _ not blessed with the crazy antics of Jed, Chip, Snake or Ralph who provided comic relief in a time of bitter rivalry. They fin- ished 13th through 16th respectively in the first tourna- ment and can be seen below showing off the latest in Ping Pong attire. Despite the tournament being held on a Friday evening which cut deeply into the drinking time of many, the boys felt it was worth it to win the admiration of their peers and all girls at the school. Kevin felt their toughest match of the tourney was against Chris and Curtis who both played for the Timberwolves in the past. Kevin and Shawn won the finals with style 11-3 leaving their opponents wondering what had happened and if they should take up lawn bowling. Timberwolves Win Annual Co-ed Soccer Tournament By Austin Narin The Rolladome was the site of a co-ed soccer tournament over Grey Cup weekend. A grueling schedule saw team’s play 5 full length games in just over 2 days. There were 7 teams including one all UNBC team. The rules were the same as usual however men could not score from outside the penalty box and teams had to have 3 men and 3 women on at all times. Although the UNBC team had never played together before they were quick to unite and rise to the top of the standings. A main reason for the Timberwolves success was the great play of the 4 the woman on the team. (Peg Garrison, Kaliopi Kollias, Sonia More, and Lia Thiesman) Both Kaliopi and Lia got hat-tricks (3 goals in a game) and Sonia was inches away from joining them. UNBC won all 5 of their games quite comfortably, including the final where despite an own goal by defender Grant McDonald they were able to overcome team Croatia.
