Thirteen” in ‘94, releasing two indie label MEMPHIS BLEEK The Understanding ROC-A-FELLA-RECORDS Praising records in ‘96, and one in ‘98 titled “In the Foul Key of V” .You can hear their latest single “Karma” on the Ml2 soundtrack as well as your local radio station. During the last six years they have done extensive touring, and, “if injury loves melody is any indi- cation (states their web site @ hollywoodrec.com)”, their time spent on the road was “six years well spent”. You could of fooled me! Honestly, these guy’s Hustlin’ bitches, ridin’ low, and smokin’ trees. Yeah that’s what this album is all about. Be it V’s, dope, guns, or whatever your vice, Memphis, Jay-z and the rest of the Dynasty are ready and waiting with thick bricks and pockets full of sticky. sound to me like a bad Blink 182 rip-off, complete with cheesy lyrics about high school love gone sour, and without any catchy hooks to spare. It’s like these guys sing about stuff just because it’s there to sing about, not because they have some- thing to say, and if they do, | didn’t catch it. That’s probably because | could- n’t stay interested from one song to the next. Listening to this album is like reading a text book, For those of you who fol- low the scene, you might want to check this out if you haven’t already, but if you’re looking for some- thing a little more laid back, or if your offended by harsh language and explicit content, then this probably isn’t for you. you finish a chapter to find you can’t even remember what it’s about, it’s that boring! And there’s also a complete lack of originali- ty for a band who claims, that they’re “always striv- ing to be different” (drum- mer Billy Alemaghides),. To me they sound just like all those other fluff bands you hear on the radio, and their online biography sums it up perfectly, “not rock, not punk, not pop”. Yeah, a little bit of every- thing, not much -of any- Personally, this stuff wears thin on me pretty fast. The first few songs are alright, but then | get bored and it’s time for a change. Like all the rap album’s they sent in the press kits, this one’s the same. Compared with big brother Jay-z’s “Dynasty” _thing, and a whole lot of kik ah Saas { have to tell you straight up, this album sucks! | don’t even know why they send me this crap, proba- bly because no one else wants it! If however, you think you might want it, you're welcome to it! Just swing by the office and state your claim, and it’s yours. this one’s close, but it sounds to me_ like Memphis is _ still the “apprentice”. CHILLOUT >2001 V.1 NETTWERK GHILLOUT >eQOO1 v - + Syrrsne Beings vs DRPUtAED & Sys Yorn > Cerppoenicc Brees Chillout 2001 is a compi- lation of “mellow tunes and cool beats”, courtesy of Nettwerk Productions. Featuring such artists as FATBOY SLIM (The Weekend Starts Here), GROOVE ARMADA (At The River), SWAYZAK (State Of Grace), SUPREME BEINGS OF LEISURE (Ain’t Got Nothin’), it “cov- ers the full spectrum of electronic flavors”. At first listen | wasn’t very inspired, just another collection of mellow tech- no tracks. And basically that’s all it is, after some time though it started to grow on me, good back- ground music for studying. As for the different tracks, | found that none in partic- ular stood out, except maybe Swayzak’s “State of Grace”, which is more lively and might even work for entertaining your “spe- cial company” if you know what | mean. This album definitely works best as a whole, put it on, sit back and chill, that’s what this one’s all about. SoundScape welcomes your opinions and contributions.
