Public Meeting with Speaker Bev Collins. Background: Ms. Collins comes from Ottawa. After years of being involved with business and government contracts in the scientific and research industries. Ms. Collins became public politi- cally after running in the 1993 Federal Election for the National Party of Canada. Ms. Collins has since run twice more in the 1997 & 2000 Federal Elections for the Canadian Action Party in the Kootenay Boundary Okanagan riding. * UNBC Feburary 7th, 8pm Rm 7-212 Climate Crisis: energy solu- tions for British Columbia A public evening event focus- ing on energy reduction strategies for BC. Gerry Scott, Director of the Climate Change group for the David Suzuki Foundation and Dermot Foley, Climate Change Researcher will intro- duce measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, build- ings, upstream oil and gas, electricity generation and commercial and_ industrial operations. In particular, the presentation will provide exciting ideas and practical solutions to help prevent the environmental problems associated with our daily activities as businesses, institutions, and individuals. * UNBC in Rm 7-238 at 7pm Forest Watch Workshop- coming early summer We are currently looking for people help organize our upcoming “Forest Watch workshop”. If you are interest- ed in forestry issues, or if you are looking for experience organizing events please contact pgpirg at pgpirg@unbc.ca, or drop by the office. * Forest Watch is currently sponsored by the Sierra Legal Defense Fund Action Group Updates PIRG is currently starting a Students for Ethical Shopping Action Group and we are looking for volunteers to help organize and participate in a fashion show that will be occurring about four weeks from now. If you are interest- ed in learning more or show- ing off your sewing skills please feel free to stop by our meeting’s * Tuesday’s at 1:00 at the PIRG office. Recycling Action Group The PG PIRG Recycling Action group is cur- rently in the process of trying to implement a door to door pick-up recycling program into the UNBC Residences. We have been working on a proposal to submit to the appropriate officials and have just written the final draft. We will be making a meeting date with Randall (res. Guy) and Godfrey (facilities guy), to try and negotiate a permanent and stable plan. If we have some luck with this meeting we will soon hopefully be on the way to having’a recycling program at the university res- idence. We are also currently looking for any volunteers that may be able to help. So, if you are interested or want to learn more- Join our meet- ings! We meet on Thursday s at 11:30 in the cave (across from the book store). Amy Gondek (Recycling group volunteer) Katimavik comes to Prince George By Colleen O’Grady Imagine living with 11 peo- ple in one house and sharing 3 bathrooms and not getting paid. On January 19th PGPIRG welcomed 11 youth volunteers and their co-ordi- nator for a potluck at UNBC. he 11 youth from across Canada aged 17 to 21 will be living in 3 regions through. Canada, one french speeking two english speeking, with ance. Prince George as their first stop. Each of the 11 will be working in volunteer comuni- ty organizations such as PGPIRG, the — exhibiton grounds and St Vincent De Paul for two and a _ half months. The program started in 1977, and over 20,000 Canadian’s have participated in the program and gained valuable work and life experi- It is estimated that since the program started, the volunteer work done by the Katimavik program for local comunities would amount to over 37 million. The program was started fed- erally by Heritage Canada. At the end of the three months there will be another group coming to Prince George.
