appears to be backed by facts,— Canada has a record of crime and criminals, more vindictive, daring and brutal, than any country in the world. For authentication turn to a striking book—‘“The Black Donnellys” — written by a Toronto author, Thomas P. Kelly for Harlequin Books. Author Kelly backs what he says from records. He made an exhaustive search of old Canadian newspapers, police and court records covering a 33-year period beginning in Lucan, Ontario, in 1847. i is a startling statement but it Thirty-Three Years of Terror CANADA’S MOST BARBARIC FEUD * He quotes these records authorita- tively as fact; not fiction; as he writes a book as gripping and suspensful as any book of fiction ever written. Backed By Facts To review the book closely would be unfair to the author who spent countless hours in gathering his ma- terial but it is a matter of record to say that Author Thomas Kelly has spotlighted for criminal history what he described as Canada’s most Bar- baric feud—and backed it with facts. To quote from his introduction, “the terrible Donnelly feud, by far the most violent and notorious in the annals of Canada, was an almost end- less series of depredations with human depravity at its worst... . Paralleling the Dark Ages “The feud began in the Spring of 1847, only a few hours after James Donnelly, an Irish immigrant, first arrived from his native Tipperary. The author quotes famous U.S. out- laws and bankrobbers. Then he says:— Worst in the World “For sheer savagery, the no- torious Hartfield-McCoy affair or the lawless exploits of Jesse James The story of the Black Donnellys rings a blank to most westerners. ‘To many Ontarians it is famous in a legendary way. A Family Against the World Then follows a macabre story of a family against the world. One gathers from Kelly’s gripping story that there was none of the Robert Hood spirit of banditry about the Donnellys. They were just plumb mean, cruel, vindictive and anti-social. There seems to be only one commendable feature about them. They were family conscious. CANADIAN LEGION B.ES.L.
