Cassiar is located in the Cassiar mountains of northern British Columbia approximately 100 miles southwest of Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, and 80 miles north of Dease Lake, B.C. The Townsite and Plantsite lie in a valley at.an elevation of 3,500 feet above sea level. The open pit mine and crushing > plant are on McDame mountain 3 miles north of the Plantsite. The town and mining operation were established in the early 1950's. Access to Cassiar is by gravelled road. About 1700 people live in the community at the present time. The average winter temperature at Cassiar is in the minus 10 to minus 15 degrees Celsius range with periods of colder temperatures as low as minus 43 degrees Celsius. The winter season extends from October to May. The average annual snowfall is approximately 3 meters. Spring and early summer temperatures normally range between 17 and 21 degrees Celsius. Occasionally the thermometer rises to around 24 degrees Celsius. The latter part of summer and fall is characterized by cloudy weather and a high percentage of Cassiar's average annual rainfall of 40 centimeters.
