HEMP: OPINION by Stephanie Willett Should hemp be legalized? This is a very controversial question. I as a non-drug user feel that hemp should be legalized, without doubt. Hemp is a weed,a plant. It is of natural origin. It is a hell of a lot more natural than tobacco, and probably does not have the horrible side effects associated with long-term tobacco and alcohol use. I do not claim to be an expert on the human body or a drug counsellor. All I claim to be is a student with an opinion, whether it be good or bad. I feel sorry for the people who are dependent on any drug be it marijuana, tobacco or alcohol. It is a sad way to live, but I also feel that if the government allows the use of tobacco and alcohol they should also allow the use of hemp. Hemp can be used for many things besides joints. A very strong rope can be made using hemp. Textiles can use it for ponchos and potato sacs. Paper can also be made. If hemp were legal, the forestry controversy would no longer be an issue. Hemp can be grown just about anywhere; it is very durable. Instead of cutting down our forests for paper products, companies can grow hemp. Hemp is also used to alleviate pain for some ailments. In Holland one can buy hemp in stores and bard. It is sold in the same fashion as cigarettes. Holland is not FOOD FOR THOUGHT by Karin Fennel Looking for a nice place to eat? Well, Prince George has the usual McDonald's, Wendy's, Arby's, A& W's, innumerable pizza parlours. But there are also places like the Shogun (specializing in Japanese food) and the Achillion (if you prefer Greek). There are also the traditional favorites like the Keg, Earl's and the White Spot. Or for a real treat try Da Moreno, Rosel's, the Loghouse or Winston's. No matter what your palate prefers there's a restaurant here to satisfy your hunger. These and other restaurants are advertised in the Yellow Pages or in your copy of the Student's Guide to Prince George, available you know where. ah Le A rotting in turmoil like Canada would if people were given the chance to smoke- up legally. Hemp has a stigma attached to it. It is a drug, a narcotic: that is why it is so feared. I personally feel that the government (and society in general) should stop being so hypocritical when it comes to marijuana. Alcohol is legal; it has laws to govern its use (ie. no driving under influence and no purchasing if you are under-age). If hemp were to be legalized I feel it would be justifiable to have laws that would govern its use. Perhaps the laws should be Stringent at first until the problems are worked out. Perhaps more stringent laws should have been placed on liquor when it was first legalized; maybe there would not be so many problems today if initial laws were stricter. Concieveably, the first legislation would only allow hemp to be grown for comunercial use (ie. not for smoking). That would be fine. This is what most hemp advocates are asking for. If people can smoke and drink; if they can get cancer of the lungs and sclerosis of the liver; people should also be allowed to toke up and get mellow.
