Page 16 January 1989 Cassiar Courier A Point of View by Don Campbell Overs the course of a month we receive a variety of press releases from government depart- ments, trade and industrial groups, and other spe- cial interest sources. The items we choose to run are what we hope will be of interest to our readers and are printed as received, with no comment. This month, however, | want to comment on two separate issues that we have printed. The first is an announcement by the B.C. government that they are delaying a decision on the granting of a Tree Farm Licence. This is no ordinary licence. This entails the biggest block of land ever considered, in any type of transaction to the private sector, and covers some 25,000 square miles. The company involved and the government have been quietly pursuing this deal for some time. Jam convinced that if not for the efforts of some very determined “tree huggers’ (and | do not use that phrase disparagingly), this deal would have slipped through unnoticed. It still may, un- less the rest of the people in B.C. wake up and act. When the first tree farm licences were gran- ted, hundreds of small companies were forced out of business or became dependent on the big com- panies. If the government continues in this style of mega-giveaway to the large corporations, hun- dreds more will go. Is this the way we want to go, with three or four giant companies controlling our public land? HOLT AGENCIES INSURANCE LTD DON’T GO UNPROTECTED. I believe we should get on the bandwagon with the tree hug- gers - they need us. Although I do not wish to appear anti- government, my second concern is also with a governinent news release. After the news last month of the big high- way improvement projects to be launched in the Lower Mainland and Vancouver Island, comes word of a province-wide Highway Improvement Plan called “Freedom to Move’. This is an 18- volume study on the transportation issues, and recommendations for highway projects in all the regions of B.C. Everyone of us who drives High- way 37 should read it (starting with the summary printed on Pages 8-9) and make sure we are not the last on the list, twenty years down the road. We need improved roads now. Well, in MY opinion, we do. Province of British Columbia Bed Subsidy Home Required A two bed subsidy home for short term placements of foster children, ages new- born to 16 years, is needed in Cassiar. This Ministry is prepared to provide $150.00 per month per bed. In addition to this, the basic foster home rate and any necessary expenses will be implemented once a_ child is placed.
