Aphrodisiacs for the 14th? By: Elizabeth Leigh Newlands The 14th of February has a love/hate relationship with most Canadians. If you have someone to share the day with, then most likely you like it. If you don’t have someone you want to spend a romantic night with then you probably wish Cupid would turn his arrow on himself! But there is no reason to waste a famous day on homework, when any excuse to party will work. There are two ways to spend that Wednesday: having fun, or not. If you are feeling that there is no one worthy of you for the 14th then what better way to spend it than with friends! To start, use irony. Send out love notes to all of your friends inviting them over. Have a few munchies out and watch the most un-Valentine movies possible or cheesy romance films that leave you rolling on the floor in tears, most notably known for their great acting skills. Have everyone bring a bottle of red wine and sleep through your Thursday morning class. Nothing goes better with red wine than chocolate. Whip up these delicious truffles. Honestly there is nothing easier. Northern Truffles What is most abundant in the North? 3 cups good quality choco- late, chopped 1/2 cup cream 1/2 cup icing sugar 1/2 coconut, shredded Melt 2 cups of chocolate with cream in a small sauce pan Top Ten Ways to Know You're on Fire This is what happens when newspaper folk have nothing to do. 1. Wherever you go, you smell KFC. 2. You no longer get the “full experience” of sushi. 3. On dates, you try to say things that will appear witty and intelligent, but for some reason it always comes out as, “AHHHH!!! OH GOD THE PAIN!!!” 4. You find yourself sucking on fire extinguishers 5. You feel emotionally attached to volcanoes 6. Smokers keep asking you if they can have a light. 7. You're really getting sick of that friggin’ Kumbaya song all over the place. 8. You eat rice crispies, but all you hear is crackle sizzle pop. 9. Smokey the Bear keeps giving you menacing looks 10. Whenever you fart, the person behind you is rushed to the burn ward. 11. It burns when you pee. Do You Have a Re over a larger pot filled with boiling water. Once the chocolate is smooth and mixed well with cream, remove from heat, cover and place in fridge. Once the ‘chocolate has become firm use a spoon to make small bails, use your hands as often as needed. Replace balls back to the fridge on a cookie sheet covered in wax paper. In. the meantime, melt remaining 1 cup of chocolate. Crown the balls in melted chocolate until coated and roll in icing sugar for half and the remaining balls’ in coconut and return to fridge. If you are stuck spending the night with some _ special, make the most of it. Stay home and make dinner your- selves. Let each of you choose your favorite dish and make it for each other. My favorite cookbook for this is Inter courses: an Aphrodisiac Cookbook by Martha Hopkins and Randall Lockridge or Plenty: A Collection of Sarah McLachlans’ Favorite Recipes with Chef Jaime Laurita. Both of these books have easy recipes that are not only sensuous, but fun to make with extra hands. If you can’t get you hands on these books in time, choose these aphrodisiac foods to make your menu around: avocados, pine nuts, artichokes, honey , grapes, strawberries, basil, chilies and of course choco- late.
