Page One Hundred and Sixteen But, before tearing another page off the calendar, it is interesting to glance at this report prepared by Ernest Gam- mon because it provides an interesting and valuable background to the work habits of the casual worker of the day, the freedom to cross national boundary lines and the general life in a frontier railroad town. Here, in part, is the statement (ex- tracted from the lengthy report and with- out revision of spelling or punctuation) : Russian Lapourer THrows LIGHT on 3ANDITS’ IDENTITY Statement taken down by George Syro- tuck (interpreter) on March 29th, 1913 at Hazelton, B. C. as stated by George Smith. “In 1907 an American Company had been hiring labourers for railroad work in Mexico over two hundred men went from Vladivostock Siberia, among those men was I and Grinko. I got acquainted with him on the steamer on the way to Mexico. We had been working in Mexico about two months and I went to San I*rancisco and from there to Portland and from there to Seattle where I met Grinko again and we were in Seattle for about three years. Two years ago in August I came with Grinko to Van- couver, B.C. I went to work on the C.N. Railway and Grinko remained in Van- couver and was once in Prince Rupert I do not know how long. When I came to Vancouver I meet Grinko again and in July 1913 about fifteen men was ship- ped for G.T.P. Rly. in that bunch was Grinko and myself. Grinko with other three men took station work from Bos- trom and in October last they was through with it and all came to Hazelton his part- ners went to Prince Rupert and Grinko left in Hazelton, Grinko is known as not very good character like most of Siberian people. “T came down to Hazelton on December 17th 1913 and shortly I meet Grinko he told me that is a good chance to get contract cut cordwood, I spent couple days on his proposition but we could only get day work. As I had a few hundred dollars I had intention to spend holidays before I would begin looking for day work. About four days before Xmas he was in my room in New Hazel- ton Hotel and after long conversation about one thing and another, Grinko asked me tell me what I shall do we took eighteen thousand dollars from bank and cannot spend money because number on them is known. I asked him how you get that money from bank he replied we took it day time five of us we had been watching bank from B.C. Rooming house for three days and at last we took with us one rifle and two revolvers, but revolver we did not use as they make too much noise | use rifle. So as soon as we saw that three men employees went out from bank and only one remain we jumped in three of us to the bank and two re- main as watchmen outside. “T said I do not believe you until you Armstrong Hotel A.
