Cassiar Shutdown announced The loss at. the Cassiar mine for the first nine months of 1985 was $669,000. In addition, mar- kets for asbestos’ throughout the world have shrunk in the past year and in order to be compet- itive, Cassiar Mining Corporation has had to lower their asbestos prices. This has necessitated ad- ditional cost-cuttting measures, which were an- nounced during December. Peter Jones, executive vice-president, Cassiar Min- ing Corporation, announced there will be a nine to eleven week shutdown at the Cassiar mine dur- ing 1986: probably two months in the summer and the rest, if necessary, later in the year. In the past, the planned summer shutdown has usually been for five weeks. He also announced that all bunkhouse accommod- ation will be eliminated. Two of the present single accommodation blocks will be converted into twenty self-contained units and the approximate- ly ninety single employees will move into these and ‘existing housing in the townsite. This is tent- atively planned for April 1, 1986. The Cookery — will then become .a regular restaurant and every- one using the facility will pay. Jones says “by running the cafeteria on:a breakeven basis, the Company expects to save approximately one million dollars per year’’. Other cost-saving measures being looked into are in the areas of waste removal at the mine and the high overhead BSSOEIACCH with: the, Operation of the townsite.
