OVER THE EOGE February 27 - March 12, 2006 FRUNNING FOR PRESIDENT Hello my name is Cameron Ehl and I am a fourth-year History and Political Science student, Over the past year, I served as Vice President-Ex- ternal Affairs as well as Act- ing President for the month of October. NUGSS has offered me an amazing experience at UNBC and I hope to further expand my role with the Soci- ety by serving as President. This past year, I led the Shinerama Campaign for Cystic Fibrosis and Chaired the Northern Transportation Improvement Commission (NTIC) which has recently proposed a UPASS for under- graduate students; the referen- dum taking place during our elections. These initiatives have provided over $15,000 for Cystic Fibrosis as well as working to help increase ac- cess to public transportation for students. I also lobbied the Charles Jago Northern Sport Centre Board of Directors to honour student parking passes so that students do not have to pay an additional parking fee at NSC. As an active mem- ber of the Executive Commit- tee this past year, I have also been heavily involved in the planning of events within our society and look forward to helping out once again in the upcoming year. This upcoming year will be exciting for UNBC, as the Northern University Student Centre will open, offering a wide array of services to stu- dents. As President, I will work to ensure that your needs are met and that your time here at UNBC is the best it can be. Wotan CLarRK Runnine For VP Finance Hello, My Name is Nolan Clark. I am in my third year of a double major in accounting and finance. I currently am in my third semester here at the beautiful UNBC. In this short time, I have submersed myself in the com- munity in such activities as, being an RA at the dorms, an active member of the Commerce Student Society, Co-chair of the 10" annual Business Dinner, and captain of the UNBC JDC-West debate team. Outside of school, I have held a successful real- estate portfolio based in the lower mainland. And on top of all of this, I have maintained a very respectable GPA. When I have time off from school, I like to ride my motorcycle, golf and do lots of camping. That’s enough about my creden- tials. I now would like to talk to you about why I chose to run for VP Finance and my promise. Every se- mester students pay fees that are not directly related to their education. To most students money is a scarce resource and that right there, is why I am running for VP Finance. I want to make sure that every student re- ceives their money’s worth of value from NUGSS. So my promise to you is simply, I will do everything in my power to see that your money is being spent in the appropriate areas and be completely transparent in do- ing so. VP Finance is a huge respon- sibility and honor; I will not take that privilege lightly. If you have any questions about myself, or my campaign please feel free to reach me on Facebook at, Nolan Clark for, NUGSS VP Fi- nance 08/09 I leave you with a quote by Rich- ard Buckminster Fuller “Integrity is the essence of every- thing successful” Thank you. Gavin CHUNG Runnine FoR VP FINANCE My name is Gavin Chung and I am currently a 5" year Finance/Marketing major with a Psychology minor and running for VP Finance for NUGSS in the upcoming elections. I grew up in the northern community of Smithers and came to UNBC to start my post-second- ary education after high school. I believe that UNBC is a great university for students that want to get ahead in life and are willing to put the effort behind their words. This is one of the main reasons that I am running for this position. I wanted an opportunity to apply what I have learned at university but at the same time benefit the students at the university as well. I have been act- ive through various clubs throughout my post-second- ary education from fundraising for clubs to being part of the JDC WEST team for UNBC to raising money for the situation in Darfur to helping run conferences for high school students at our university. I am currently part of the monetary affairs commission (MAC) board for NUGSS and Treasury for the Psychology club. So, I have a familiarity of how NUGSS is run and how to improve it for years to come. NUGGS has improved throughout the years I have been attaining the univer- sity but it can be better. Along with the Northern Sports Centre being com- pleted this past year and the upcoming construction with new Student Union building, NUGSS will be an essen- tial key player in helping educate students all the new services that will be provided to them. One common problem I keep hearing’ about NUGSS from students is: “What does NUGSS do?” or “How does NUGSS benefit me?” Most have the same answer of they take just my money for my health and dental plan. NUGSS does more than take our money for our health and den- tal plans. They provide clubs money for events, fund student venture grants, plan social events for students and promote student spirit and much more. If elected as VP Finance, I hope to increase awareness of NUGSS and what services they can provide for students in gen- eral through better communication. Students deserve to benefit from services that they are provided and es- sentially pay for while at this university. I also hope to create an environment where students can freely ad- dress the concerns they may have about NUGSS and encourage an exchange of ideas that would not only benefit NUGSS but the general student population as well. If anyone has any questions, concerns, comments or ideas, my Facebook group is: “Elect Gavin Chung For VP Finance For NUGSS.” SHAWN | RENNEBOHM RUNNING FOR | ASSOCIATE DireEcTOR OF | EVENTS AND 1 PLANNING Hello there, I am running for the Associate Director of Events and Planning and my name is Shawn Rennebohm. I am a 3rd/4th year student in a joint major of Political Science and Econom- ics, with minors in Women’s Studies and First Nation’s Studies. Over the past few years on campus, I have been a part of several activities with several clubs. I have acted in several capacities within these clubs, ranging from an ordinary member to the president of a few. Some of the clubs I have been a part of, but are not limited to, are: MUGGSS (Mature Undergrad Graduate Student Society), NESS (Northern Economic Student Society), PSSA (Political Student Society Association), MUN (Model UN), and WUSC (World Univer- sity Service of Canada). I can say with much ease that I have benefited from the amount of activities these and other clubs have held over the years on campus; so, with that, I wish to be able to do the same for fellow students. I want to increase the activities on campus, and help the clubs when hosting them — not just NUGSS events. I would B like to see events that are good for all ages, some more pub crawls, as well as events in which we can get a whole range of people (even outside of our community involved). I would like to see a § greater focus on fundraising for charities in the area, and a promotion of the incredible character that UNBC has. Most of all, I will find ways to do this without increasing the budget, your student fees, or affecting other areas of spending. When- ever possible, I will try to obtain stuff for free, from donors, or at a discount, and work with the VP of Finance to keep the costs of events with in the budget so that future activities and events are safe, based on a sustainable economic model. I think I am the one to do this, not just because I have been with clubs in the past but because of my work with the school in general. I have sat in jf the Senate for the last 2 % years, and have chal- ff lenged cuts to programs, fought for co-op, and § taised issues about the biometrics being used at the Northern Sports Centre for students. I have chaired meeting as a president, taken notes as a secretary, and acted as a treasurer in different clubs. I have promoted causes and events, and I am certain I can do this job that students are look- ing for me to do. Having sat upon Senate and worked upon NTIC § (Northern Transportation Improvement Commit- tee) for the last few years, I feel | am familiar ff | enough with the processes in NUGSS that I can move right away into being an effective member for you, the voter. I believe it is my experience on campus that can deliver a quality product for ff ALL students on campus. On March 5 & 6, I'd like to make that happen with your vote. Go to the Facebook group “Elect Shawn Rennebohm for A.D. of Events and Planning” to show your support, or email me at rennebo@unbc.ca for fur- ther questions.
