DAWSON CREEK CO-OPERATIVE SHIPPING ASSOCIATION Shippers of Livestock for the Peace River Block HENRY BENTLEY, President ELGIN WILSON, Manager As we were still in view of the horse- man, the chief said he would go past the barns and around the corner where the road turned. It was just a few hundred yards and as soon as we were out of sight, we stopped the car and ran back to the barns. Hawkins had continued until he came even with the edge of the barn when the posse jumped him. When he saw the group around him his hand flew to the revolver in his belt, but before he could draw it from the holster, a special constable reached up and tore the belt and all from him. Meanwhile he was covered with rifles in the hands of the others. The chief and I reached the group just as he was being handcuffed. The prisoner was driven to the lock-up at Williams Lake, and on the following day was taken to the 153 Mile House, where an inquest was held. DAWSON CREEK HENRY McQUEEN, Secretary British Columbia After a preliminary hearing the accused was brought to trial at the spring assizes at Prince George. The jury found him guilty of man- slaughter and he was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. It was learned that on the morning of the killing, Hawkins had gone to the corral, where he was met by Duggan, who had just arrived and was still on his horse. They quarrelled, one thing led to another and Hawkins had pulled out his revolver and fired. Duggan toppled from his horse dead. Hawkins had then dragged him to- wards the trees and when stopped by the fence he returned and got wire cutters and cut a gap in the fence. He then pulled the body through and hid it behind the log. His only thought was flight, so he saddled his pony and took off down the road, stopping at Crosina’s store to buy some ammunition for his revolver and a few chocolate bars. It turned out that Hawkins had a criminal record in the United States, and had come to the Cariboo to hide from the law South of the Border. * * In Sacramento, California, a man named Clancy has been sued for $558 in back child-support payments by his former wife.
