Dur- ing the war the entire personnel of the marine section left the police force to enlist in the navy and during the early days of the war one naval officer observed that the only navy we had consisted of the Mounties and the rum-runners they used to chase. Today, however, rum-running Is at an all-time low. Nevertheless the R.C.M.P. now maintains a sea-going section of four ex-navy escort vessels (known as the “Commissioner” class), four “Fairmile’ motor launches (‘Fort” class), and thirteen former harbor defence patrol craft (“Detach- ment” class). All of these vessels, which are used for effecting sea-rescues as well as suppressing smuggling and rum-run- ning, are equipped with Radar, Loran and Radio Direction Finding equip- TWENTY-FOURTH EDITION ment. The detachment class patrol boats on the west coast are used in the ports and harbors to police not only the more populated coastal areas but the rugged settlements along B.C.’s coastline. Probably the least known of the “C” Department branches is the Special (Intelligence) Branch. On the surface the work of this office is mundane and devoid of interest. It consists of advising private businesses on how to safeguard their plants and factories and checking on subversive elements. However, underneath the surface the Special Branch is engaged in a constant and unrelenting. struggle that is not only dangerous for those taking part in it but could affect the foundations of our national existence. This is the R.C.M.P.’s battle against communism and subversive activities. The Special Branch has been keep- ing a finger on the communist ac- tivities in this country ever since Sgt. John Leopold (now superintendent) was assigned to investigate the Com- munist movement in 1921.
