March 23, 1999 SPORT TS UNBC’s First Provincial Gold Medal! By Jeremy Fung It was just a matter of time before one of UNBC’s teams started to be contenders. The UNBC cross-coun- try ski club attended the provincial championships and they did very well. To put it in perspective, Cross Country BC is to skiing as the BC Junior Hockey League is to ice hockey. It was formed early this winter and has shown that many of its mem- bers are world class athletes. There are 42 mem- bers of the club. Each member pays a $5 membership fee which gives them passes for skiing twice a week, free coaching from three registered coach- es and equipment and waxing advice. Club members abilities range from beginner to expert. Members train twice a week at Otway, 20 km west of the campus. Many of the members also race every Wednesday evening. The club deals with two types of skiing: tour- ing and racing. Touring is simply casual skiing, while racing is generally on pre-made tracks. the world (well, BC anyways) By Jeremy Fung On March 13, the UNBC Paymentwasinthe form Baroness of the Medival club "Wolfpack" journeyed to Camrose, AB, near Edmonton to battle the local medival club Borealis. The long journey was made by eleven warriors and womenfolk. The Wolfpack was hired by Red Deer's Bitters End as mercenaries. of food. Together they battled the Borealis, and despite being outnum- bered 40-30, they held their own. Twice they lost only by three war- riors. Five of the seven knights of Borealis were fighting. Gracing the fes- tivities with their pres- ence was the Baron and Borealis and one of the viscounts of An Tir. The fighting was followed by much feasting that con- tinued into the early hours consuming Alberta fermentations. Every last one of them said it was well worth it. Prince George is the ideal place for many athletes who wish to train in the Nordic sports while pursuing an academic career. It is the only place in Western Canada that provides such an envi- ronment and it is also the reason several of the club members chose to study at UNBC. The club will be split- ting so that the racers in the group can join the Junior Varsity team next September. “Next year we hope to place in the top ten in Canada,” said Sean | Rowell. Next year may mark the dawning of an athletic legacy for the UNBC cross country ski team. To get in touch with the team contact the president Chris Paulson at paulson @ unbc.ca.
