Prescription was a huge success. D’oh Boy Productions’ Scotty Oh came directly from Vancouver, to headline the event, and show the people of Prince George his brand of speed garage, hard house, and hard klubb. Opening the event was Prince George’s DJ Coal, who entertained those who came early with his high- energy house and trance set. Following Coal was DJ Heiper, from Toronto. He played some house and breaks, and set the mood for Scotty Oh’s entrance. No stranger to what the audience likes, Scotty Oh raised the energy through the roof. Opening with some nice speed garage, he had the audience guessing what would come next. What came next was very nice remixes of classics like the Vengaboys “Superfly Slick Dick”, the Black & White Bros. “Put Your Hands Up’, and “Bomp De Da” by the Candygirls. When the audience heard “Put Your Hands Up”, they were only too willing to do as asked. After Scotty was Fresh Beats resident, Monte Martens, whose progressive house and progressive trance set let the crowd chill a little after the intensity of Scotty’s set. | highly recommend checking out Monte’s set at the lIronhorse on Thursday nights, if you want a taste of what he played at Prescription. Rounding out the night was UNBC’s DJ Weasel, who had the crowd back on their feet with his fast paced set. Drum ‘n bass, death house, happy hardcore, and gabber were all included in his mix, along with some _— scratching. Prescription was most defi- nitely what the doctor ordered. 20¢c3,5S Photo contributed Scotty Oh asked them to put their hands in the air. What else could they do? Residence Internet Shut Off For Now By Dana Schwehr On February 27th, 2000, Residence students returned from their Reading Week vacation to find their Internet service cut off. According to an email sent out by UNBC’s Computer and Telecommunications Services (CTS), the shut- down occurred because of too much traffic in the Residence connection. This crashed an important switch down at the University, caus- Under ing the Internet to crash for the whole school. CTS shut down the Residence connec- tion for a period of five days, in order to fix the problem, and to perhaps come up with a solution to the problem. Although his was an extreme inconvenience to Residence students, it is obvious that something needs to be done. Unfortunately, notification of this event was sent to Residence users through their UNBC email accounts, Page 2 News Page 3 Sports which not every Residence student uses. Also, not every- one knew that they could still access their Ugrad accounts from Residence, and many Residence students don’t know that hey also have access to the UNBC comput- er labs. Perhaps this caused some of the wild rumors that were going around the school, such as ideas that the connection had been termi- nated because of one student running an MP3 server. The Page 9 CONTEST Enter The Bloody Contest it’s free stuff why doesn’t aby body ever enter the contests?!? Another rumor was_ that Toronto lawyers had threat- ened UNBC with legal action if something was not done about students downloading MP3 music files. Both of the rumors are not true, accord- ing to Philip Ashman, a net- work administrator for CTS. He says that the Canadian Recording Industry Association (CRIA) has sent letters to UNBC, telling them that the downloading will have to stop, or the CRIA will have to take legal action. The Residence has been creating a huge increase in the amount of Internet traffic at UNBC. There has been a 50%increase_ in_ Internet users in the Residence over the last three years, with approximately 370 users cur- rently registered. Also, over the years, users are becom- ing more knowledgeable about the information that is Continued on Page 6 Covers Page 11 Kornered Horoscopes
