MAREN ORD Waiting NETTWERK For those of you who dig on . the Sarah McLachlan/Sarah Horner BIGDUMBFACE Duke Lion Fights the Terror FLIP/GEFFEN 3000 MILES TO GRACELAND Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Here’s the soundtrack to type of folk/pop, then Maren Ord is for you. However, if you prefer something original, cre- ative, and that doesn’t come out of the same folk/pop can as more tal- ented acts do, then I’d say look elsewhere. Though Maren’s biography on her official website (www.marenord.com) totes her amazing and “gifted songwriting abili- ties” as being full of “pas- I’ve got to tell you folks, amongst all the rap and other pop crap they (the record companies) send me in their press kits, it’s nice to get something orig- inal, interesting, and strange. This album was written in full by Limp Bizkit guitarist Wes Borland. It sounds nothing like Limp Bizkit, and, is definitely (in my opinion) a keeper. From full on “death metal” the film 3000 MILES TO GRACELAND. This disc is - full up on the “new rock” that so many of the high school kids are into (like FILTER, NOTHINGFACE, SHIPSANK etc...) also there’s some _ ambient electronic stuff as well (BT, HARDNOX, CRYSTAL METHOD, HEADNOIZE). This album’s pretty con- sistent throughout, with just a few tunes that stand out from the rest, i.e. “Mansion on the Hill’(A3), Kenny Wayne Shepard’s “In 2 Deep” and That of “The King” himself, Elvis’ “Such A Night”. So what’s sion and _ confidence”, umm, well honestly, it’s a big fat hairy lie. The songs on this cd _ Waiting, although decent enough with catchy melodies and good performances, are singularly unremarkable. There’s no passion or con- fidence. Every song fol- lows the Folk Ballad Formula: opening guitar, verse 1, chorus, verse 2, chorus, instrument solo, chorus, vocal improv, (“Burgalveist, Blood Red Head on Fire and Organ Splitter) to cheesy theme song spoofs (Duke Lion) and all sorts of other shit . (the liner notes for “Space Adventure” are written a la STAR WARS), this album sounds like a blender full of Cannibal Corpse, Primus, Rob Zombie and Dr. Suess. | don’t know what Wes is’ smokin’ (c’mon the dude dresses in body paint, and has no the verdict ? | wouldn't throw it in the trash, but | probably wouldn’t keep it in the changer either. Overall | say it’s a bit of a ‘tweener, you know- almost...but not quite. But hey, I’m pretty. picky so don’t mind me....This one’s worth a listen at least. By Andrew closing guitar. Highly orig- inal. (note the dripping Sarcasm) But, | shouldn’t bash her too hard. She does have a really great voice, and all of the instru- ments are played with an adequate amount of profi- ciency. And she’s Canadian; fresh from Edmonton, Alberta, if you care about that sort of thing. She’s cute too, which helps the dull liner notes. Overwhelmingly, pupils), but you’ve got to credit his imagination (there’s some pretty graphic puking sounds at the end)...| have to say | like it! (the album, not the puking sounds...those are just sick). It’s refreshing to (get)hear something other than radio or club music, not that all that other stuff is all that bad, it’s just bor- ing ang predictable (kinda like my x-girlfreind was). So there it is, if you’re Oz The Soundtrack NETTWERK Ven 22 LSAT ee Here’s the soundtrack to the HBO series Oz, a dramatization of life in “the Pen”. Like the show this album paints vividly some of the harsh reali- ties of the life behind bars. Featuring such artists as MASTER P, SNOOP DOGG, NATE though, the lack of origi- nality combined with lyrics that aspire to be cryptic but instead just don’t make sense, doom this album to the Trash Heap of Mediocrity. Too bad for her. Us too. Sigh... By Mark anything like me (kind of juvenile), and you like some heavy guitar, you should dig it. By Andrew DOGG, KRAYZIE BONE, WU-TANG CLAN and CYPRESS HILL this disc has cuts from all the “Masta Gangstaz” of hip- hop. | have to be honest with you this review is a last minute thing, and | haven't really had the time to give this album a fair listen or write all the particulars, but | can tell that at first listen | was actually impressed. | find this album to be a little bit more laid back then some of the others I’ve reviewed, and it’s full of good hooks. It’s definitely worth checking out espe- cially if you’re into the series. By Andrew
