Bwahaha! The fools left me alone to write the review myself! Foolish mortals! Now | can run amok, filling the world with my... aw crap, who am | kidding, | don’t know what the hell I’m doing. O.K., let’s focus now, let’s see, we could start with a... a... aw crap. Who in their right minds would ever let me write the anime review with- out sane supervision? Well, anyways, Scryed has turned out to be quite the hit in Japan as of late. Since the first episode was aired in mid- June of last year, all those folks out in TV-land have been getting a big collective boner (that’s right, | just said boner, bet you haven't heard that one since that last time you babysat) over this series. In fact, it was posted as being the most popular anime in Japan as of February of this year. . What you must be saying now. is, ok, Ryan, Scryed is a big hit, so why the hell have | never heard of it, you smarmy git? Well, look here Buster; there is no need for name- calling. lt seems that Scryed has everything going _ right; Scryed is produced by Sunrise, the same company that gave us Cowboy Bebop and Gundam Wing. It was also written by Hajime Yadate, the same man that is credited as being the author of Cowboy Bebop, and Sunrise was lucky enough to get the director of Ryvius working on it as well. But enough formalities, let’s get on with the foreplay. Scryed is set in Japan in the not-to-distant future, approximately 20 or:so years after a great cataclysmic dis- aster has horribly scarred the landscape and left some of -the inhabitants of earth wield- ing strange and exotic matter- altering powers, which leads to them to be called Alters. More often than not, these strange and exotic powers are used to turn the side of a building, or perhaps a park bench, into a strange and incredibly fashionable mechanoid, ready to do the willing of its maker. Now you got your Good Alters and your Bad Alters too. With me so far? The goody-good Alters wish to use their powers to make the world a better, safer place whilst the baddie Alters want to... | dunno, blow shit up and yell real loud as far as | can tell. Now the Good Alters live in the city and work for a mys- terious government organiza- tion called HOLY. The baddy- bad badass Alters live out- side the city in almost utter squalor. For some reason, there are a lot of people that don’t quite seem to be baddy- bad-badass Alters, yet they still live in squalor. Hmmm, | guess I'll have to GE.11! Over The Edge Page 14 __ Anime Review : March 4, 2002 look into the socio-economic problems faced in anime today some other time. Although the whole plot line is pretty standard, | found this series interesting. I'll never understand the trend of short, nearly nonex- istent skirts on EVERY female character in EVERY anime made in the last ten years. O.k., you're right, maybe not EVERY anime, but it sure as heck is a lot of them.... The characters (despite their sheer whorishness) were interesting enough to make me_ watch four episodes, then hunt for more, and the development of the plot was unique enough as to make me think that maybe this wasn’t the exact same anime | watched last time around. All in all, | think Scryed is a fairly decent anime fun for the whole fami- ly, even grandma.
