head by Dougal, a mile or so down the
dark and lonely country road, early
in the evening as the couple returned
from Clavering. He had brought the
body of his victim into the deserted
farmyard, placed it in the open ditch

with a bundle of brush piled nearby
for burning.

What his two later excursions were
for that night, no one will ever know.
They say a murderer returns to the
scene of his crime?

Dougal was up early the next
morning and made his own breakfast.
He ate it alone in the dining-room in
sober silence, casting a sullen glance
now and again at the girl who sat in
the kitchen. Perhaps a fifth sense
warned him against trying to take
further liberties; there was too much
at stake now.

At eight o'clock, in answer to her
daughter’s frantic letter, Mrs. Black-
well arrived on the scene and the
buxom country woman told Dougal
in no uncertain terms what she
thought of him, and she ended her
tirade by demanding a month’s wages
for her daughter. Dougal morosely
paid the money, and mother and
daughter left.

Now he was alone, and he got
quickly to work. Making sure that the
landscape held no prying eyes, he dug
a shelf in the side of the ditch and
wedged the body into it. Then he
covered up the opening with soil.
Satisfied that no trace of the hastily
prepared grave was left, he journeyed
into Clavering in the afternoon and
hired a couple of laborers to come out
to the farm and fill in the whole ditch.

He felt a little easier a day or so
later when the work was done.

He Had to Have Company

Alone in the house day after day,
the silence grated on Dougal’s nerves.
He had to have some company. There
was the real Mrs. Dougal in London
who he had not seen or heard of
since he took up with Miss Holland.
He would get her down. As the result
of a tender and persuasive note, Mrs.
Dougal put in her appearance. She
was a thin, submissive little creature,
who had married Dougal in Ireland
seven years before. ‘Their married life
had been a cat and dog affair.

Without a doubt Dougal’s coarse,
virile masculinity must have been
fatally fascinating to certain types of
women; Mrs. Dougal, like Miss Hol-
land, was of the type. She had her
troubles with Dougal. In fact they
were no sooner married than Dougal
got enamoured of a certain Miss Booty,

and he eventually brought her to stay
under the same roof with his bride of
a few months. But even lady’s man
Dougal couldn’t drive this team; the
unusual arrangement ended in Booty
charging Dougal with theft. He
proved in court, however, that the
articles Miss Booty claimed had been
bought by him in the first place and
given to her as a present. The case
was dismissed.

Mrs. Dougal Arrives

But now apparently Mrs. Dougal
thought that bygones were bygones;
and when she arrived at Moat Farm
she was surprised to find her husband
