Visiting the trading post, Millen

any questions, and’—Firth suddenly

“Good day!” Spike greeted the
stranger affably. “What's your name?”

“Albert Johnson,” came the sullen
reply. “Who the hell wants to know?”

“Where do you come from?” Spike
asked quietly, ignoring the stranger’s
rudeness.

“I’ve never seen you there,” said
Millen, “and that’s my detachment.
So where are you from?”

“Came down the Mackenzie from
the prairie,” growled Johnson.

Millen’s eyes hardened. Again the
man had lied. “Where are you bound
for?” he demanded.

“None of your damned _ business,”
Johnson spat viciously. “I don’t want
nuttin’ to do with no police. There’s
allus trouble when they're around!”

Turning insolently on his mocca-
sined heel he strode out of the store
and down the trail towards his canoe.
Millen could not detain him. After all,
there was no charge against the man.
