Arthur, and probably unjustly, I was just
a mite afraid that, in his enthusiasm and
desire to fully demonstrate, he might push
me over the banister. I declined.

First Visir TO COAST

That was Arthur all over, he was an
enthusiast, he was devoted to his art. I was
one of the timekeepers when he established
the world’s record for speed in executions.
It was the first time I had ever seen him, and
it was, in fact, his first appearance on the
Pacific Coast.

A notorious individual named Henry
Wagner, who rejoiced in the alias of The
Flying Dutchman, escaped from well
merited justice in the United States and
entered upon a career of piracy on this
Coast, looting summer homes and small
craft. During a shopbreaking at Cumber-
land, he murdered Prov. Const. Westaway.
He was captured by Provincial Police and
was duly sentenced to hang at Nanaimo
Gaol.

It was in the summer of 1912. I was sent

morning. The sun was streaming into the
dining-room of the old Windsor Hotel when
I went down for an early breakfast. There
was no one in the room as I entered. I was
hardly seated when a dapper little man in
a grey suit, with a pink rose in his button-
hole bounced in and approached my table.

“May I sit here?” he questioned after
giving me a cheery greeting.

“Certainly,” I replied.

“Youre up early this morning,”
beamed.

I nodded agreement.

“Perhaps,” he ventured, “you’re going
down to see the regrettable affair at the
gaol?”

“JT am, unfortunately,” I said.

“Ah, too bad that such things have to be,”
he murmured, shaking his head. “But then,
men will commit crimes that the law decrees
deserve capital punishment—and the law
must be supported.”

“T suppose so.”

“Are you a commercial man?” queried
my table companion.

“No, a newspaper reporter.”

He fairly beamed; “Oh, I know a number
of newspapermen,” he volunteered.

From that introduction we drifted into
a discussion of literature, and I found that
