NADIA NOWAK NUGSS PRESIDENT B...\ yo) B Kadagn Klepsch, the out-going Colleges Representative for NUGGS, spends time Wednesday afternoon trying to draw student interest to important issues facing the student society, including the upcoming referendum. t has been an exciting year for NUGSS and the time [« come for the next cohort of directors to step up to the plate and continue working to improve the stu- dent experience at UNBwC. The election period is under way and all students are encouraged to engage in this im- portant process---run in the election, listen to candidates’ speeches, follow the campaigns and head to the polls and vote! UNBC is what you make it and NUGSS works to im- prove the experience for all students; this is your chance to make a positive contribution. This article includes im- portant dates and information about the 11 positions that make up the NUGSS Board of Directors. Nomination Period: February 3rd---February 16th During the nomination period, interested candidates must come to the NUGSS office to pick up a nomination pack- age which includes information pertaining to election procedures and regulations and requires them to collect at least 15 signatures from UNBC undergraduate students stating their support of the candidate’s campaign. 2. Campaign Period: February 16th--- March 5th This is your time to convince students to vote for you! Put up posters, set up a table, do an interpretive dance- -whatever it takes! (as long as it is within campaign rules). 3. Candidate Speeches: February 28th @ 12:00 in the Wintergarden Each candidate will give a 2-minute speech followed by questions. Speeches will also be posted on YouTube. 4. Voting Days: March 6th and 7th Come to the Northern University Student Centre (NUSC) from 9:00am-4:00pm and cast your vote. May the best candidates win! Engage with your student society. Board of Directors’ Position Summaries President Acts as a liaison between University administration and students; works to oversee the Board of Directors; and the strategic direction for the year. The NUGSS President is the chief spokesperson of the Board of Directors and also maintains external relations with other bodies and universities. Required to work a minimum of 60 hours/ month. VP External Acts as a liaison between NUGSS and external groups such as the Alumni Association, Regional Campuses, and the Where’s The Fund- ing Campaign. Co-chairs the Northern Transportation Improvement Commission (NTIC) and the NUSC Committee. Ensures NUGSS’ communications such as web and social media are up to date and relevant. Required to work a minimum of 50 hours/month. VP Student Affairs Manages all clubs under NUGSS and oversees NUGSS policies. Ensures all student representative positions on University commit- tees are filled. Works to inform the student population, particularly NUGSS clubs, about activities of the Society. Required to work a minimum of 50 hours/month. VP Social Plans and executes all NUGSS events such as the Backyard BBQ, Jump Back to New Years and the Final Affair. Works closely with the Associate Director Events-Planning and Associate Director Events- Promotion. Facilitates and organizes the Events Planning Committee (EPC). Required to work a minimum of 50 hours/month. VP Finance Is responsible for assembling and acting as chair of the Monetary Affairs Commission (MAC). MAC distributes funding to clubs, and Student Venture Grants. Oversees the financial affairs of the Society. Required to work a minimum of 50 hours/month. Women’s Representative Represents women’s issues on campus and works directly with the Women’s Centre to make sure that any needs women may have are being met. Organizes the annual National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. Required to work a minimum of 15 hours/month. Associate Director Events-Planning Works with the VP Social and AD Events-Promotion to plan and exe- cute all NUGSS events. Helps secure sponsorship for events and ensures the NUGSS event calendar is maintained. Required to work a minimum of 15 hours/month. AD Events Promotions Works with the VP Social and AD Events-Planning to plan and exe- cute all NUGSS events. Is responsible for the sponsorship and pro- motion of events. Required to work a minimum of 15 hours/month. First Nations Representative Represents Aboriginal students on campus by providing a strong link between NUGSS and the First Nations Centre. Organizes and pro- motes events and activities, and liaises with the Peer Support Net- work. Required to work a minimum of 15 hours/month AD Campus Sustainability Works to support a greener campus at UNBC and promotes Canada’s Green University. Is a member of the Green University Planning Committee and is the Chair of the Greenhouse Advisory Committee. Required to work a minimum of 15 hours/month Academic Representative Is responsible for the interactions between NUGSS and the academ- ic bodies on campus--the College of Science and Management, the College of Arts Social and Health Sciences, Senate, and Board of Governors. Is responsible for maintaining the Better World Books Program. Required to work a minimum of 15 hours/month.
