The main emphasis is on fun, however there are a great many oppor- tunities available. Many roles within the club allow members _ to develop their leadership skills. There are fall and spring divisional confer- ences that bring togeth- er. all the clubs from Northern British Columbia. At these con- ferences members compete in speech competitions, and attend various semi- nars. The winners of the divisional speeches move on to the regional level and eventually on to the national and inter- national levels. The initial annual membership fee is $95, for returning members it is reduced to $80. Members receive a leadership and commu- nication package, the eligibility to compete in the toastmaster compe- titions and a subscrip- tion to the Toastmaster magazine. The maga- zine provides valuable resources for preparing speeches. Ray Zukanovic, a member of the U - Speak Toastmasters Club, described how Toastmasters helped him. “When | got to my third and fourth year classes, | found they had lots of emphasis on oral presentations. | was nervous, like every- one else | would stutter and stammer, using lots of ‘uhs’ and ‘ahs’, but Toastmasters has given me the confidence to speak publicly.” If you are interested in contacting the group you can call Ray Zukanovic at 563-0799, email the group at uspeak@canada.com, or check out the website at www.unbc.ca/tm.
