N.W-T. At that time, he had been in the R.C.M.P. for two
years, and in the Arctic for about a year. His duties include
seeing to the general welfare of the Eskimos in the area
around “Tuk-Tuk,” as it is known, a small settlement on the
coast of the Arctic Ocean at the eastern end of the Mackenzie
Delta. He also issues permits for exporting furs outside the
Territories and does usual police work. This picture was

taken at the end of the surnmer. Though at the time he was
wearing his peaked Mountie hat, most of the time, except for
a short time in midsummer, he wore an Eskimo-made parka
for protection against the biting wind which blows off the
ocean most of the time. With the main Arctic ice pack
seldom more than 100 miles or so offshore, the wind is nippy
most of the time. Though younger than most of the people
with whom he deals, there was seldom much trouble for
Const. Maidens. The R.C.M.P. uniform is highly respected
in the far north.
