With Christmas just around the corner, everyone is
making preparations for the festive season. Dr. de la Mare
and family are fleeing Cassiar for the holidays to spend
time with relatives and friends in England and Scotland.
Dr. Crawford looks forward to Hogmoney — you’d have
to be Scottish to understand this one. Larry Otto will
be our locum during this time. Dr. Otto is well known to
Cassiar residents and can be seen on his daily ten mile
run or cross country ski. Truly a man of many talents and
interests. Dr. Otto makes every opportunity to get in-
volved with all the functions in Cassiar. Word has it he
devoured two entire prime rib dinners and seven desserts
at our Dinner Theatre! Be it a Tupperware party, fashion
show, bazaar or ladies tea you can count on seeing Dr.
Otto there.

Judy is off on yet another shopping spree and plans
to buy out Edmonton Mall and Heritage Mall. Is she really
renting an 18 wheeler to bring back all her purchases?

Irene enjoyed her lab and x-ray technicians conven-
tion in Red Deer in early November. She is now full of
ideas for her department. Irene has received some new
equipment including an automated ECG and hematology
machine. This allows her to take more coffee breaks with
the time she saves. Irene is off again to spend Christmas
with her family in Alberta.

We hope the Christmas spirit will shine in Cassiar
as the holidays approach and that you, your family and
friends have a happy, healthy one. The staff at the Cassiar
Hospital would like to take this opportunity to wish you

all 4 very Merry Christmas and all the best for 1986.

Cassiar Leos first
in District 49B

On August 31, 1985, Cassiar Lions Club gave birth to
a new addition to its club — “The Leos”. This is a younger
version of the combined Lions and Lioness Clubs, and
they plan on being active in the community organizing
and conducting various functions for worthy causes. The
age for Leo membership ranges from 13 to 19 years. This
is the first Leos Club in our District 49B, but there are
Leo clubs all over the world.

To charter the Club, Lions District Governor “Cotton”
Rozelle from Fairbanks, Alaska, and Deputy District Gov-
ernor John Bunker from Whitehorse, were in Cassiar.

A great meal (courtesy of the Cookery) was enjoyed
by approximately fifty Cassiarites. At the chartering were
the first Cassiar Leos — President Sonia Girardin, vice-
president Robert Rudkowsky, secretary Tammy
McDougall, treasurer Nelson Hartman and members
Danny Walters, Bobby-Joe Liddle, Celenka Krawczyk,
Dorothy Duffy and Darcy Meers. Special recognition was
given to Rob Best, the original president, who was not
present as he had left for college. Rob was instrumental in
the formation of the Club.

Since the chartering the Leos have been active. Some

“of the functions they have aided with or done on their

own are the juice station for the Terry Fox Run, Hallowe-
en for the children and the children’s carnival. The next
two planned are a TV Bingo and a Dance-a-thon.

There are six nights of bridge to report for this issue of
the Courier. We have had difficulty in attracting members
of the community to the Tuesday evening bridge sessions,
both past members and new members. It seems that there
are a lot of things going on in town and people are willing
to join only after Christmas and even then only on a part-
time basis. As any member of a club must realize, consist-
ency of membership attendance is the most difficult to
achieve.

Nevertheless, we are still a viable club, in our second year
of operation. A bridge fanatic is ever true to his game, and
we have a number of them. Thanks for the support!

DENTAL DEN

Modern dentistry — so what is it? Well, it isn’t an
EXACT science and never will be. What works on one per-
son may not necessarily work the same for another. But
dentistry has come a long way, especially the last 30 hes
or so.

Much of the good dental work done now is due-to im-
proved anesthetic solutions (freezing) and routine use of
rubber dam. There are still a few patients who dislike hav-
ing their work done with the rubber dam. Actually, it
speeds up the procedure by holding tissues back, keeping
the area dry, and does prevent any particles from being
swallowed. Better tools such as high speed drills have
drastically: improved procedures too. They make virtually
any restoration possible. Then there is root canal treat-
ment (endodontics). Just mentioning this seems to fetch
some worried looks. In reality it is quite a routine pro-
cedure and has a 98% success rate. It involves cleaning out
the inner pulp and root canals of an infected tooth and re-
filling it with a sterile rubber material. The end result has
saved a tooth which otherwise might have been extracted.
This tooth now remains intact permanently even though
it has lost all feeling.

Identification through dental records is becoming
more widely used these days. Teeth are individually
unique and their use in identifying persons is known to
be more reliable than fingerprints. Parents are now able to
have identification installed in children’s teeth by way of
a tiny microchip. It is bonded to the side of a tooth and
requires no freezing. This causes no discomfort to the
wearer and microchips are almost impossible to detect by
an untrained person.

Next month I will talk about implants 2 and domestic
dentistry.

In and Around Cassiar Secondary School

Term One at Cassiar Secondary ended early in Nov-
ember. Report cards were issued and Parent-Teacher inter-
views were held. Thirty-eight students have earned recog-
nition for their scholastic achievements. Students must
pass all subjects and achieve averages of C+, B or A to
qualify for the bronze, silver or Bold Honor Roll. The

At the end of every month teachers are surveyed to
identify the most exemplary student in each class. Stu-

- dents are evaluated on the basis of their achievement, at-

tendance, attitude, behavior, effort and work habits and
must be nominated by at least three of their teachers to
qualify. The most exemplary student in each class has a
letter of recognition sent to their home. Letters have been
sent to acknowledge the exemplary performances of Jan-
ice Joseph, Travis Penno, Jennifer Pewsey and Jacqueline
Molan. Ellen Artico and Mary Molan have each received
two letters of recognition.

Four Cassiar Eagle Volleyball teams hosted teams
from Watson Lake on Saturday, November 16. It was the
first competition of the season for the Eagle teams with
all teams giving a good aecount of themselves. The Junior
Eagle teams were both defeated by their Watson Lake
counterparts. These teams are in a skill building stage and
have benefitted from the experience. The Senior Girls also

lost but suffered, nye from over anxiety. Despite the
loss, they gave a good account of themselves.

The Senior Boys defeated Watson Lake in three
straight games. The whole team played well with outstand-
ing performances turned in by Nelson Hartman and Pat
Moth.

The volleyball Eagles played in Watson Lake on Nov-
ember 30. The Senior Girls’ and Boys’ teams will be trav-
elling to Whitehorse for the Yukon Champtionships on

December 6 — 8th. The volleyball teams are coached by '

Ms. McCargar.
Mr. Vickery is planning to take the Junior Girls’ Bas-

ketball team to Terrace on December 5 to compete in the :

Zone 7 playdowns.

The Drama 9/10 class will be presenting a play to the
Secondary and Elementary schools early in December.
The play “Sir Slob and the Princess” is being produced
and directed by Mrs. Best.

Dorothy Duffy, Cassiar’s current radio personality,
appeared on Debra Walker’s Radio Program on Friday,
November 8. Dorothy participated in a student panel. Cas-
siar students can be heard the first Friday afternoon of
every month on CBC Radio.

class for the Home Economics Lab has arrived. It’s a
