T HAS BEEN HELD that success-
ful police work is 50 per cent
hard work and 50 per cent getting

the “breaks.” Frequently the latter
follows the former, but there have
been occasions where what might have
been a successful operation is doomed
by a series of adverse instances that
favor the criminal, and temporarily at
least frustrate the ends of justice.

thirties two of the
bandits were Charles Bagley and
Edward Fawcett. Cool, calculating
and fearless, they participated as a
team in a series of unlawful ventures
that made their names a byword in
criminal history of the day.

shot, while Fawcett was equally
adept with a rifle, and they did
not hesitate to use firearms when
opposed.

authorities had received information
from underworld contacts that Bagley
and Fawcett contemplated a major

British Columbia coast, and warnings
to be particularly alert were sent to all
detachments of the Provincial Police
in towns where the team might strike.

For some reason the police at
Powell River did not receive any
advance notice of what was in
store for them. It may have been
believed that Powell River was
too far off the beaten track, as
their previous attacks had been
directed to cities and towns on
Vancouver Island.

In any event no one noticed a small
boat with two men and an outboard
motor poking along Jervis Inlet near
Stillwater and landing on an unin-
habited stretch of beach; much less
that the two men were Bagley and
Fawcett, for whom the police of two
countries were looking.
