Lumber, Builders’ Supplies BOX 994 police, and gave a very good description of the two men who had held him up, and then held him in captivity for a twenty mile ride. While the search for the pair went on in Nelson, The Trail City Police telephoned and reported another hold-up in their city that morning. It appeared that a second-hand store pro- prietor had been attacked by two young men in his store. They had tied and gagged him, then rifled his cash and stole four watches and a camera. The search continued, and during the afternoon two men answering the des- cription of the wanted couple, were seen close to the railway yards. As the officers sought to close in on them they van- ished among the cars and were soon lost to sight. For five hours the search was continued without relaxation by both city and Provincial Police. Around 7 p.m., Guard R. Thompson of the Provincial gaol at Nelson received a telephone call that two suspicious men had sought lodging at an auto camp east of the city and on the north shore. Not being able to secure accommodation, they had gone east on foot. At the time the call came in, Chief Const. Bone of the City Police happened to be at the gaol. He at once picked up Const. Fisher of the Nelson Police, and advised the first Provincial constables he could contact. In the Highway Patrol car, Constables Elphick and Ruggles, with Chief Bone and his constable in the City Police car, crossed on the 7.30 p.m. ferry to the north shore of the Kootenay River, then con- tinued east for about six miles along the road to Fraser’s Landing. Suddenly in the glare of the lead car’s headlights, two figures appeared trudging along the highway. Instead of stopping behind the two men, the highway patrol car passed them and stopped, blocking their further progress. The second car then stopped and held the men in the headlight’s beam. Converging on the pair from front and rear, the four officers closed in. Chief Bone then reached out and removed a .45 calibre Colt Automatic pistol from the inner pocket of one of the pair, while the constables continuing the search found each man in possession of a sheath knife. Both men answered the description given by the taxi driver. Under close guard, the prisoners who had been arrested and charged on the spot with the crime of robbery with violence, were taken to Nelson gaol and turned over to the guard.
