While war time conditions accounted for the slightly smaller entry list, never- theless some brilliant scores were turned in. The league winners averaged 269 x 300 per man for the three matches. Walter Bailey’s 834 x 900 for the series took the high individual award for the league. His February score of 280 over the course was in true Bailey style. Perhaps there was a reason. There was—if you keep these two facts in mind: (1) That Italian generals get $2500 a year and Bri tish generals $13,750 or so a year; (2) That under the Geneva agreement, long in force, the captured officers shall be given the same pay by their captors as similar officers in the latter’s army. Hence one can almost picture Musso’s mob humming Pooh-Bah’s plaint: “I am so proud, if I’m allowed my family pride to be my guide. But family pride must be denied, and set aside and mortified’ when a matter of $11,250 a year additional compensation, with less work and shorter hours, beckons. For the same reason one can understand why British generally are up against no such temptations. Neither are their officers. A good policeman is one who thinks more of other people’s feelings than his own rights, and more of other people’s rights than his own feelings. AN English prison missionary who, in making his rounds of the cells, used to ask every inmate: “Well, my man, and what do you d when you are out of prison?” “One convict answered: “In spring ] picks peas, in summer I picks fruit, ip autumn I picks hops, and in winter I picks pockets.” “And what happens then?” asked the missionary. “Then,” continued the prisoner, “I comes in “ere and picks oakum.”—Malayan Police Magazine.
