Pond’s Inlet, where two lone white men battled for a kingdom of ice and snow. trading post ashore and spend the winter trading guns and other things for their furs. Since these people seemed much richer than Jen, and offered more for the loan of their women, they transferred their affec- tions to the newcomers. Life was really getting interesting! From the moment of the Albert's arrival Captain Janes had become a changed man. The smile had left his predatory visage to be replaced by a look of haunting fury, while his strident tones arose frequently in angry vituperation. Friendly Eskimos, anxious to help, were shouldered aside with wrathful looks as he eyed the progress of the opposition post and watched boatload after boatload of goods discharged there. Quick to sense the change, the Eskimos re- marked that the man with the flaming hair and narrow eyes seemed angry. Others told of hearing him arguing loudly with Florence and the captain of the Albert. Yet, they wondered, what had these white men to quarrel about since each was surrounded by all this wealth of goods? When the ships disappeared beyond the ice-flecked horizon there stood on the bleak shore of Pond’s Inlet, 3,500 miles north of New York City— in the very shadow of the Pole itself— two puny shacks. One belonged to the Arctic Gold Company, with Florence in charge, while, half a mile away, there arose the consummation of Captain Janes’ long dream. Biting cold sealed ponds and lakes in an iron erasp, fringing the salt bay with an ever-accumulating mass of ice. Rolling fogs and vapors rising from the open sea ascended the wild mountains, blocking out the stars. Furious blizzards of days’ duration buried the puny huts beneath mountainous snowdrifts while upon the sea, now black as indigo and no longer dotted with the bullet-like heads of seals, floated huge frowning icebergs. Janes’ earlier trip aboard the Gov- ernment patrol ship had been beset with frequent quarrels and bitter mis- understandings with the captain. On the point of departure with the Kite he’d quarreled with his backer, Joe Baraga, at St. John’s. Then, to add to the disagreement, he’d run up un- authorized bills along the Labrador coast, telling the traders there to send them to Baraga. Wanted to be Uncrowned King Janes had figured on having this frigid kingdom for his own, to be the uncrowned king of these shaggy Igluliks with nobody to contest his rule.
