" from the members of the Cassiar Mine \ Rescue Team as the winners of the 7th ) Annual Mine Rescue and First Aid Comp- etitions were announced by Brian Pewsey during the presentations prog- ram after the banquet on the evening of May 26, 1978. The competitions were sponsored by the B.C. Department of Mines and Petroleum Resources, and hosted hy Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Ltd., and held in an used Asphalt plant on the outskirts of Smithers, B.C., an ideal ‘setting for the problem designed by Bert McConachie, Chief Judge and ‘Rescue Coordinator from the Kamloops Mine Rescue Station. The Rescue Competition was won by the Cassiar Team, captained by Garry Smith with Mike Zemenchik, Wayne Mayell, Don Toth, Lynn Duff Brian Chandler, Vice Captain, and Al Jubenville. Bell Copper from Gran- isle won the second place position. Ni Other teams competing were from Yi Granisle Copper, Endako Mines, and N: Cyprus Anvil Mines from Faro, Yukon. This year's competition featured the first ever entry of a Mine Rescue team with a woman member. She was Elaine Wolfson of the Endako team. Seven judges rated the perform- ance of the rescue teams during the problem situation. The problem site was Called a Crusher and Concentration Plant. The rescue team does not know of this worker until they have reached and questioned the man on top of the hopper. The solution to the problem was to locate the victims, put out the fire, lock out all related equipment apply the necessary first aid and rescue the victims back down_to ground level where an ambulance was standing by to transport them to a hospital. The Cassiar team per- formed their duties very well and as a result won the coveted Depart- ment of Mines Shield for Open Pit Mine Rescue work. Each team member also won a beautiful trophy in bronze displaying a statue with arms upraised in victory. Corporation received a wooden Scroll that also displays the victory statue. The shield is located in Garry Smith's! office in the Equipment Garage and the Scroll can be seen in the Safety office where they are looked upon with pride. The Cassiar team has won the honour of advancing to the Provinc- ial Open Pit Rescue Competiticn to be held in Bowen Park in Nanaimo, B.C. on June 17, 1978 where they hope to repeat their winning performance and become "number 1 in B.C." and the Dominion. of Canada. This was the first ‘year that all of the Companies spon- sored a First Aid team in addition to a Mine Rescue team. The Cassiar First Aid team members were Wayne Mayell, Lynn Duff and.Al Jubenville and this group is to be commended for.a job well done. Cassiar Asbestos Corporation, Ltd., hosted the competitions and was represented by Brian Pewsey, our Mine Manager, whose enthusiasm and support for the “team very dear to his heart" was overwhelming. The Cassiar team traveled with its own fan club that consisted of Peter and Kerry Jones, Doreen Pewsey, Carla Smith, Peggy Tomashewski, Pat Stewart, Carmen Jubenville and ' Bernice Borsato, our good luck charm. The first place trophies were presented to the Cassiar team by Doctor James Fyles, Deputy Minister ; of Mines, while the second place trophies were presented to the Bell Copper team by W.C. Robinson, Chief Inspector of Mines. The First Aid trophies were presented by Ted Williams, St. John's Ambulance Association from Prince George. See page 10 and 11 for more pictures and*-details.
