Though many years have passed since a desperado’s bullet wrote “finis” to a most promising career, it is still a privilege to salute the memory of a most gallant gentleman. Now in Kamloops, and also formerly in the land of totems and turbulent waters, is Staffsergt. Andy Fairbairn, who, in the : piping days of yore, traversed the woodland trails around Telkwa, which was his home base, with indefatigable (and that’s a powerful big word) zeal. “IT do love the woods,” Andy would exclaim with a bunch of nostalgic sighs. Staff-Sergt. A. Fairbairn “The drowsy mur- murings of the honey bees, the soft whisperings of the sum- mer zephyrs, wafted ever so lightly through the quivering aspens.” Then, with his teeth clenched in malevolent Gaelic hate, ‘‘And the cute little mosquitoes, and the dear little ants, and the friendly little black-flies— hoot, mon, how I do love ’em.” A “TALL” Mosquito Story I believe it was Andy who told me about the giant mosquitoes in the Babine Lake terrain, where he used to trek occasionally to bestow peace and benignity upon the little brown brothers who are 90-odd per cent. of the population. It seems that a harassed fisherman tourist, stung to des- peration, sought sanctuary in an old, over- turned steam boiler, relic of some lustier era. The skeeters, which were apparently raised upon a steady diet of fish oil and juniper berries, still attacked, driving their stingers right through the heavy boiler-plate. Every time a stinger bored through, the refugee clinched it on the inside, using a heavy stone for a hammer. Presently there were enough anchored mosquitoes on the outside of that boiler to lift it up and fly away with it, leaving the status quo of the luckless fisher- man unchanged. Staff-sergt. Andy now has a busy office and a bunch of men to super- vise. He still functions with unruffled calm, his slight suggestion of embonpoint—merely a suggestion, mind you—imparting a sena- torial bearing. There was a time, not so many moons ago, when his little mary threatened to revolt, and to embark upon a career of its own, but, with a spartan Scotch determination, Andy promptly adopted rigorous measures, and has once more re- gained complete control of the situation, which, as official reports would say, is now “well in hand”. THE PENETRATING EYE Surveying the wide panorama of the sage- brush and orchard belt, from his inner sanc- tum sanctorum, is Inspector C. G.
