~{ To CARIBOO AND BACK }-- CHAPTER EIGHT JIM AND ARTHUR There was a French Canadian in the party, a half-breed guide named La Foi with whom Jim often consorted and who had taught him a good deal about shooting and trapping the game of the prairies. Approaching the line of woods he had seen from the trail Jim decided to enter it from the far side, for the wind was with him, and following La Foi’s instructions he must come up with his deer against the breeze, lest his scent be carried to them. So he skirted the trees for some distance before he dived in among them. The cool of the shade was very pleasant after the glare outside and he stopped a moment to enjoy it and to look around at the fine trees, poplars and cottonwood. It was still quite light but would not stay so for long as in the prairies twilight does not linger long. Here Jinks must be left behind, so he tied him securely to a sapling and proceeded cautiously on foot. ne ee EEE aIEaT ane EEEnSLSnSnEaEnnnNETISSaEENSESIN [95]
