16 March 30, 2011 + Over the Edge Cornerec on Campus Over the Edge Asks: LOAa do You think or the ttniversiz V farmer ‘Ss prarke : 7 The second UFM took place last Tuesday and, according to the student population, was a huge success. Designed to offer some local flavor to our isolated campus, UFM gives students and faculty (and one president?) the opportunity to leave Eurest behind while choosing to keep their hard earned/borrowed dollars within the local community. UFM participants were asked for their opinions on the farmer’s market, how they might see it improved, and what local foods mean to them. “I think the UFM is great. Its important to support the local community, to keep our money within the local economy. The more the merrier” Mike Leggat, NRES Master student “Makes me feel like I’m home again. It’s a great little market atmosphere, a very social experience that is far more friendly than your typical grocery store” Alika Rajput, Northern Studies, 3" year ‘meade’ (beverage of the Nordic “Pm excited by the honey | bought. I hope to get more in the future. It makes a great gods)” Shain Doggridge, Geography, 4" year “I'd like to see more customers! {Provided it doesn’t detract from downtown business, we’ll love to host the UFM in the future. | jregret having brought my lunch today!” George Ilwama, President and Vice-Chancellor of UNBC “With all the bread, I’d love to see more things like flour, the raw ingredients. It’s especially great to have this up here on campus. As a green university, this local effort is really great. If it were a regular event I’d do all my shopping here!” Katelyn Nestman and Deanna Kerrigan, both Nursing, 4" year “The UFM is absolutely wonderful opportunity for the campus population to access jfresh, local produce and artisan goods. It’s a great social atmosphere that helps give back to both the vendors and sellers” Margaret Lipbke, UFM and PGFM Manager “I love it. | think they should encourage more vendors, maybe including student vendors!” Fraser Hayes, Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Management, 3" year “?’m super excited about it and | hope it continues. I'd like to see more recycling outlets. Promoting it here seems like a good idea because recycling is so inaccessible in Prince George” Lyssa Maurer, NRES Master student “It’s a great initiative. | think it should take place in the Winter Garden in instead of the event space. Tim Hortans should be banished to the far corners of the universe and the UFM should be front and center” Karah Mclean, 4" year English and & Political Scient JOHN HALL
