Cassiar Courier _ the Voice of Cassiar Country NOVEMBER 1980 10 cents 'TRAFFICKERS SENTENCED As a result of undercover work by three R.C.M.P. in Cassiar recently seven Cassiar residents were tried for trafficking in narcotics — Kim James Beaudoin, Gregory B. Hanson, Brian Clemens, Richard Adams, Ian Bandeen, Joseph Buyck, and Richard Zemenchik.. Previously all the accused had pleaded “Not Guilty’ and elected trial ty Judge and Jury but at court on November Sth 980 all pleas were changed to “Guilty.” Throughout the proceedings the efetee lawyer, Mr. Fisher, used the theme that these transactions were not of a commercial nature and that the ac- cused only sold the narcotics to the undercover agents as favors to friends and that this type of transaction was quite common among the narco- tics users in Cassiar. He used. the term ‘‘conned in- to trafficking” frequently stating the undercover agents were very personable and very convincing in putting across their desire to purchase the nar- - Otics. In sentencing the judge said that from the testi- mony given, drug use was very prevalent in Cassiar - and generally there was no problem in obtaining same. He felt that the community as a whole was very concerned.and should not have to accept the accused back into their society. The sentences handed down were: Richard Adams, Ian Bandeed Brian Clemens, Kim James Beaudoin and Joseph Buyck were all put on fourteen month probation to keep the peace and be of good behavior. They must not en ter the community of Cassiar from November 30, 980 until expiry of the probationary period. Fail ure to comply will result in breach of probation and the accused canbe: brought back before the judge for resentencing. Richard Zemenchik received two concurrent 14 month probation sentences to keep the peace and be of good behavior. He must not enter the com- munity of Cassiar fom Nov. 30, 1980 until ex- Piry of this probationary period. In addition, they each received fines as follows, payable by Dec. 31, 1980, or 90 days in jail. Richard Adams ~ $600.00 Ian Bandeen $300.00 Kim James Beaudoin $750.00 Brian Clemens $250.00 Joseph Buyck $300.00 . Richard Zemenchik $375.00 on each of two counts Gregory B. Hanson was fined $210.00, payable by December 31, 1980, and he was placed on _pro- tation for a 14 month period to keep the peace ana be of good behavior. If there is any breach of probation he can appear before the judge for re- sentencing. Luanna Mathies and Duane Battaja pleaded guil- ty to possession of narcotics and each were given a conditional discharge and must keep the peace and be of good behavior for one year. Stays of proceedings were entered against charges : ‘of possession of narcotics against Richard Zemen- chik and Cindy Kelunick, Donald Christie and Sherry Jones and Kim Beaudoin. Stays of proceed- ingswere also entered against Cindy Kelunick for trafficking, one charge of trafficking against: Gregory Hanson and one charge of trafficking against Stephen Ritter. Continued ‘on Page 20 SILVER REPOLUSK — 20 YEAR AWARD Sixteen employees of Cassiar Resources were hon- ored at the Long Service Awards presentations held on October 24 in the Lions Room. TWENTY YEAR S SILVER REPOLUSK was hired on May 10, 1960 as a sheetmetal worker. He transferred to staff on September 15, 1971 as Sheetmetal Shop Foreman Presently he is Sheetmetal Foreman in the Mill Maintenance Department. The remaining fifteen people received 10 year service awards. MILL . GLEN BILLINGSLEY came from Trail, B.C. on August 10, 1970 and was hired as a sheetmetal © worker. He. is presently a millwright. IVAN COLAK came to Cassiar from Yugoslavia and was hired on March 12, 1970. Ivan has worked in various maintenance departments, mo- ving into the Mill in March 1979. He was pro- moted to Mill Maintenance Foreman Sept. 2, 1980 > RECIPIENTS OF TEN YEAR AWARDS STEVE CURILA was hired on June 26, 1970 at the Clinton Creek operation as a mill laborer ‘operator. He was promoted to Mill Foreman ‘March 15, 1973 and transferred to Cassiar in the same position on November 30, 1977. CIRIL HABJAN was fica in Clinton Creek in February 1970. He held various positions in the mill before being promoted to Maintenance Fore- man on November 19, 1971. He transferred to Cassiar as Mill Maintenance Foreman on Novem- ber 1, 1978. ’ MINE . AVTAR DHILLON came from India in March 1970 and hired on at Cassiar Arpil 13, 1970. He has held various positions at the Mine from labor- er to operator at the Primary Crushing Plant. TONY ZEMENCHIK hired on with Cassiar as a shovel operator on July 6, 1970 and was promot- ed to Mine Foreman on December 1, 1975, a pos- ition he still holds. et Continued on’Page 2 ff
