Page 4B July 1986 Cassiar Courier Section B Grads Receive Awards Four students graduating from Cassiar Secondary School have received scholarships and bursaries to assist them in continuing their eduation. MICHELLE BILLINGSLEY received the Cassiar Mining Corporation Leadership Bursary totalling $500. She also won the Stikine School District Award for 1986. The $500 award is presented to the student who is above average in all areas — academic, citizenship, service, school participation, diversity of programs of study in Grades 11 and 12 and post-secondary ambitions. She will receive an additional $500 after she enrols in a post-secondary institution. Michelle was also the co-winner of the Lions Bursary. She shares the $900 award with David Madore. Michelle plans to take a two year Criminology course in Vancouver and then join the RCMP. MICHELLE BILLINGSLEY MICHELLE KORHONEN was awarded $4540 from the MTC College of Business in Vancouver, The scholar- ship will cover the tuition costs for her course. Upon graduation Michelle plans to work in the secretarial field. MICHELLE KORHONEN DAVID MADORE DAVID MADORE was the recipient of the $600 United Steelworkers scholarship. In applying for this award he had to write a 2000 word essay on “What the Union Means to Me’. David was also co-winner of the Lions Bursary. He shared the $900 award with Michelle Billingsley. In applying for the Lions Bursary the students also had to write a 2000 essay on “What Lionism Means to Me”. David plans to take recreation administration at Lethbridge Community College in Alberta. JACQUELINE MOLAN JACQUELINE MOLAN was awarded the Cassiar Mining Corporation Academic Award of $500. She also - received the 1986 Governor General’s Bronze Medallion for being the graduate with the highest academic standing. In addition to these awards Jacqueline has received a $2400 entrance scholarship to Simon Fraser University. To apply for the scholarship she had to write an essay, receive letters of recommendation from two teachers and achieve a high academic standing. Jacqueline plans to study commerce at either U.B.C. or Simon Fraser University. Cassiar Personnel changes KEITH MINTY Chief Engineer \al Keith Minty graduated from Queens University in 1978 with a B.Sc. in Mining Engineering. After graduation he went to Bamangwato Concessions Ltd. at Silibwe, Bots- wana as an underground shift boss. In 1979 he returned to Canada and joined Fording Coal Ltd. as mine engineer, in- volved in all pit engineering and production. He was in- volved in all phases of open pit operations and mine plan- ning. In 1981 he joined United Hearne Ltd., Taurus Gold Mine operation, at Cassiar, B.C. where he was the Mine Engineer until the closure of the mine in 1982. He later joined Allis Chalmers, Vancouver, B.C., as a Technical Sales representative and in 1983 joined Giant Yellowknife Mines Ltd. as Project Engineer/Assistant Chief Engineer until 1986, when he joined Cassiar Mining Corporation as Chief Engineer. As Chief Engineer at Cassiar Mining Corporation he will be responsible for all engineering functions of the Open Pit and the McDame Exploration Project in the field of engineering and supervising the development constract- ors of the McDame Exploration Project. ROGER B. TYNE Senior Mine Geologist Roger B. Tyne graduated in 1969 from Laurentian University with a B.Sc. in Geology. After graduation he worked five years as underground geologist at Falcon- bridge, Fecunis and Strathcona Mines. For a short time he then worked for Patrick Harrison mine contracting group of companies in Labrador and Newfoundland and : then he joined Asbestos Corp. Limited in Thetford Mines, Quebec, where he spent 8 years as Mine Geologist and Senior Mine Geologist. This work involved all of the geological aspects of underground and open pit mining of asbestos, both in the Thetford Mines area of the East- ern Townships and at Asbestos Hill in the Ungava Penin- .sula of Quebec. More recently he has worked as Field Supervisor for Maine Diamond Drilling Limited, and as Contract Geolo- gist for “Societe Nationale de L’amiante”. Mr. Tyne comes to Cassiar Mining Corporation Ltd. from Camchib Mines Ltd., where he was Mine Exploration Geologist. As Senior Mine Geologist at Cassiar he will be involved with both the Cassiar mine and the McDame Under- "ground Exploration project. ey ~~ Cassiar Personnel changes STEFAN DYK Technical Sales Manager Stefan was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1946, and matriculated from Damelin College, Johannesburg, South Africa in 1963. He spent two years citrus and | sugar-cane farming before joining Havelock Asbestos Mine, Swaziland in 1965. While at Havelock Stefan studied Mineral Dressing and Mining Metallurgy, and in 1969 was transferred to Shabanie Mine, Rhodesia, as Milling Efficiency Officer. In 1972 he became Mill Manager of Gaths Mill, Mashaba, and in 1976 was promoted to Mill Superintendent of Gaths, King and Temeraire Mills. In 1978 he moved to African Associated Mines Head Office in Bulawayo. Stefan joined Cassiar in August, 1980, as Mill Super- intendent and has now been promoted to Technical Sales Manager, effective July, 1986. In this capacity he will be working out of Cassiar Mining Corporation’s offices in Vancouver. PAUL MacRAE Mine Superintendent Paul was born and raised in Timmins, Ontario. He completed his post-secondary education at Haileybury School of Mines in 1974 and later attained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mining Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines in 1978. Paul came to Cassiar in January, 1984, as Assistant Mine Superintendent. Prior to that time he had worked as the Senior Planning Engineer for Luscar Sterco Limited in Edson, Alberta. He had also worked for six years as an engineer with the Iron Ore Company of Canada in Labra- dor City, Newfoundland. MELVIN S. TAYLOR Mill Superintendent Melvin S. Taylor was born in Asbestos, Quebec, where he graduated from secondary school. He then re- ceived a Diploma in both the technical and engineering fields from various institutes in Quebec. Following this, he furthered his studies in the business administration and management field, successfully obtaining his Diploma in Business Administration. Mr. Taylor worked for 20 years in the mining and milling of asbestos fibre while living in Quebec. Prior to joining Cassiar Mining Corporation in | July, 1977, he worked in various capacities with Johns Manville Canada. He spent nine years on the administra- tion and engineering of environmental control techniques in the asbestos industry prior to joining Cassiar Mining Corporation as Chief Engineer - Environmental. While at Cassiar Mr. Taylor has progressed through several pos- itions to his most recent assignment as Mill Superinten- dent. - 4
