formation from the lodging-house keeper.
As the crowds left after the last show,
he was easily picked up. On searching
him, numerous drivers’ licences were
found in his possession, all secured under
different names, in various places, purely
to. establish bogus identities. He was con-
victed in a number of towns and did not
bother merchants for some time there-
after.

“Another bogus cheque operator whom
I knew, frequented the board room of an
established and reputable brokerage house
in Vancouver. During his visits to the
office, he contrived to stamp a number of
blank cheques with the protectograph on
the cashier's desk. The machine had the
firm name set in protectograph type, as
well as the amount. Later, the operator
filled out the blank cheques on a type-
writer, and signed forged names in the
signature space. The cheques passed very
readily, the impression of the broker’s
name usually being enough to reassure
the person cashing the cheque. Many
cheques were thus passed before he was
caught.

“In another case the forger travelled
around from town to town, calling at fur-
niture stores and feed merchants, usually
on the pretext of purchasing some com-
modity which required the attendant to
absent himself for a few minutes. The
forger would then steal the firm’s rubber
stamp, or else imprint it on several
cheques which he had brought with him

were presented to other stores, filled out
as wage cheques, or payment for some
grain, or for some second-hand furniture
supposedly sold by the forger.

“Many of the better known operators
carry the small printing outfits which I

have previously mentioned. These are ob-
tainable at most stationery or dime stores.
Besides these outfits, some have been
known to have a portable typewriter, and
a cheque protectograph. Two or three
different coloured inking pads, and a hand-
ful of various blank cheques, complete
their working kit. To these items there
are added numerous bogus identity cre-
dentials. The latter are only limited by
the imagination of the operator. In one
instance, a thief stole a cheque, and at the -
same time took the addressee’s light bill
which happened to be in the mail box.
Taking the bill to the public utility com-
pany, he paid it. The bill was returned to
him marked ‘paid’. When cashing the
stolen cheque later, he produced the re-
ceipted bill as proof of his identity, which
was accepted without demur.

“The trickster is a student of psy-
chology. He has the personality necessary
to sell himself to his intended victim. He
uses every artifice and device to ensure an
appearance of good faith, and often
assumes a rather stupid character to dis-
arm the object of his fraudulent atten-
tions.
