Page Four very thought of having to share his spoils with Joe Florence bred an ever-increasing bitterness in his heart. The North does strange things at times to a man’s soul. Unending night, and the incessant doleful moan- ing of blizzards for days on end, breeds bitter, rebellious instincts—the desire to fight back at somebody, or something. As the temperature dropped to 50 below, and the un- utterable loneliness preyed on Janes’ mind Florence assumed the role of a COPYRIGHT PHOTO The pelts of fluffy white foxes were the lure that sent one man to his death and a lone Mountie in a ten thousand mile search of a nameless killer. trespasser into what the captain con- sidered was rightfully his own exclu- sive domain till, like a bushed trap- per, the grievance obsessed Janes’ every waking moment. Soon Nukud- lah and his people were treated to the strange spectacle of these two lone white men, separated by thousands of miles of glacial wilderness from others of their own kind, and having at their joint disposal a region the size of half a dozen states, squabbling over white fox skins and avoiding each other like poison. When one Eskimo had plenty and others less they simply pooled their luck. Why didn’t these white men live together, laugh, feast and have a good time for, didn’t they have warmth, shelter, and more food than they could use? Nukudlah’s people liked Joe Florence. Genial and good-tempered like themselves, he always gave them a ready smile and a-feed of biscuit and HOTEL HUDSON J. W. His eyes deepset and blood. shot, he acted like one possessed of evil spirits if he caught them selling furs to his rival. At last they became afraid of the captain and sneaked stealthily over to trade their skins with Florence. One day Janes intercepted them with a smile and motioned them over to his store. “Take what you want,” he told them. “You don’t have to have any skins. You can trap the white foxes and pay me later.” Nukudlah’s people laughed with sheer delight at the idea of trading foxes still un- trapped and roaming the hillsides, They left the store with arms loaded and, deserting Florence, flocked back to Janes. A cunning smile played about the captain’s lips. With these Huskies in his debt he’d have a mortgage on their future fur hunts. Summer again settled upon Pond’s Inlet, the green waters alive with bullet-headed seal and wildfowl. Tusked walrus would rise in Stately dignity from the waves, survey the shore with benign solemnity and dis- appear again. Schools of playful porpoise dived and cavorted, flashing whitely in the summer sun. Joe Florence, anxious and worried, roamed the crags, his eye rivetted out to sea for the now over-due Albert, yet the short Arctic summer drew to a close without a sign of the Arctic Gold ship. Then winter clamped down again. Marooned Beset with the gnawing pangs of hunger, Florence continued his lonely vigil long after he realized that the ship couldn’t possibly arrive.
