March 24, 1998 LETTERS No sleeping allowed No Sleeping Allowed! So what's that all about. As | scan the notes on the UNBC flames bulletin board (a bitch board, for those of you that don’t sub- scribe), | was intrigued about the discussions around the new no sleeping policy. The notes were the usual complaints about administration once again invok- ing senseless policies whose only purpose seems to be to annoy students. | was intrigued enough to make a few enquires and thought | might share the information | received. In fact there is a new policy and it is no longer acceptable to sleep at UNBC (residences excluded). If you are working late at night and decide to use one of the sofas in the Doug Little lounge to catch a few winks, you will be awakened by a commissionaire. The policy may seem senseless, but as is often the case it is a reaction to one or two individuals abusing a previ- ously tolerant system. Each morning the commission- aires make the rounds opening rooms for that days classes. It seems one morning they opened a classroom and found several students camped out. These students were not just having a quick nap, they had bedrolls, sleeping bags, an electric wok, and a food and beverage.supply with them. Once they packed up and left, the classroom could not be used that day because of the mess and smell left behind. The result was that administration began to examine the amount of sleeping being done on campus. As people were being awak- ened it became apparent that a large number of the comatose bodies were not computer sci- ence students, they were not even UNBC students. They were from CNC, high schools .and transients looking for a warm piace to sleep. The com- missionaires have since been Fighting for Security | want to thank the 504 people who supported our beloved security; The Commissionaries at UNBC, by signing the petition | started. Too often we hear, “There is not enough money to continually support blah, blah, blah.” Well, its bogus. That's precisely what the People on top of the Power Pyramid want you Just Because... to believe, and it’s an illusion, a false conciousness ingrained into our heads. The truth is there is money, but it’s not being dis- tributed: it's making those at the top, rich. And you, poor. The bottom line, however is that this is YOUR University and YOUR safety, your security should not be compromised by just because it costs-more - doesn’t mean it’s better just because it’s university - doesn’t mean it’s higher learning just because it’s a student loan - doesn’t mean it’s not welfare* just because we eat it - doesn’t mean it’s natural just because I’m doing it - doesn’t mean you should just because they tell you to - doesn’t mean you shouldn't question it ~ just because they want to - doesn’t mean you should accept it just because you don’t have a PhD - doesn’t mean you aren’t knowledgable just because it’s a job - doesn’t mean it’s ethical just because you’re poor - doesn’t mean you don’t have rights just because there’s a system - doesn’t mean you can’t have rights just because it’s hard - doesn’t mean it can’t be done just because $$money$$ talks, - doesn’t mean you can't find your own language just because you're reading this - doesn’t mean you'll take action just because I’m writing this - doesn’t mean someone will listen instructed to awaken any sleep- ing bodies around campus. Part of the reason is to keep UNBC from becoming a hostel, but there are also safety issues involved. The commissionaires are not rousting people and throwing them off campus, although if you are sleeping here because you can’t get home they would make arrangements for a ride. | expect that at some time in the future, when non-UNBC people get the idea that this is not a hos- tel, and when students under- stand that camping inside the buildings is not acceptable, enforcement of the no-sleeping policy will lighten up. In the meantime if you must sleep on campus, try to do it during one of your less stimulating class lec- tures so that you can get some uninterrupted zzz’s. Furthermore, the argument goes, because unemployment is a necessity in any capitalist society it is your right to receive this subsidy because you are part of making the system run effectively. ‘Come and see our unique Retro Clothes | TWO DOLLARS OFF YOUR NEXT PURCHASE l (one coupon per purchase) Marki Sellers UNBC Student
