Largely due to the big payroll of the Consolidated Mining and Smelting Com- pany, Trail is the largest of the cities in this division. It boasts a population of 12,000 and has grown considerably during the last few years. While Trail has size, however, Nelson is achieving the name as the “Hub of the Interior.” With a population of 6600 Nelson has established a community reputation few SERGEANT ANDREW FAIRBAIRN N.C.O. in Charge of the Grand Forks 2 Police District “ANDY” was born in Scotland in 1887; was with the C.P.R. Police in Vancouver in 1911 and 1912, which force he left in March, 1912, to join the B. C. Provincial Police. His first detachment was at Decker Lake in 1914; in 1917 he was transferred to Telkwa, where he remained until 1929, when he was moved to Smithers with the rank of Corporal. In 1930 he was promoted to the rank of Sergeant; in 1934 was transferred to Cranbrook, and in January, 1938, was transferred to Grand Forks, where he is at present on duty. cities or towns can parallel. Located on the west arm of Kootenay Lake, it is a C.P.R. divisional point and houses many govern- ment offices. Industrially, it boasts a mill, a brewery, a veneer plant, and a match factory which exports match blocks to all parts of the world. It is a centre hub for the small mining towns which surround it in all directions. Its Civic Centre, which cost a quarter of a million dollars, is one of the finest buildings of its kind in Canada. One of the beauty spots of the division is Penticton, the centre of the South Okanagan apple growing country. It is a distributing point for large wholesale fruit houses and is widely known as a travellers’ haven, with its many scenic beauties. The policing of this district presents a big task, for it is widespread, with more than the average number of populated centres. For this reason it is extensively equipped with motor patrols which play a vital part in the B. C. Police servicing of this area. There are six patrol cars operating in the Division, all coming under the jurisdiction of headquarters at Nelson. These are stationed at Nelson, Penticton, Cranbrook, Fernie, Grand Forks and Castle- gar. The policeman in many of the divisional centres is essentially a diplomat as well as a minion of the law, the need for tact in mining centres being widely recognized. Except on rare occasions there is little in the way of unusual duties for the officers to perform. As in all organized territories, their duties are those of routine investiga- tion, unlike posts where the B. C. Police representative must act in a host of other capacities as well as that of policeman. KIMBERLEY HARDWARE COMPANY LIMITED Carrying a Full Line of Hardware and English China e KIMBERLEY, B. C.
