With Mounted Police and posse-
men riding behind him, James Mac-
Kay prepared for another assault
upon the death-dealing bluff. Again
covering guns barked as the cavalcade
thundered down the slope, across the
flower-strewn prairie, and into the
heart of the thicket; now torn and
lacerated by fragments of bursting
shells.

End of the Trail

Suddenly MacKay pulled rein. At
his horse‘s feet gaped a rifle-pit. And
in the bottom lay the contorted and
blood-stained body of Almighty Voice,
his skull laid open by a bursting shell.
Across his body lay the twisted form
of his cousin, Little Saulteaux, also
dead. From the bush ahead came a
surprised cry. Attired in red tunic and
the breeches stripped from Constable
Kerr’s naked body lay a third dead
Indian—Almighty Voice’s brother-in-
law, Young Dust, who’d evidently
sneaked into the pit to help his be-
leagured friends then thought better
of it. Caught in an attempt to desert
his companions, in the stolen garb of
the dead Mountie, he’d been shot in
the forehead by Almighty Voice.

Stripped of revolvers, guns and
ammunition, the bodies of Kerr and
Grundy were found where they had
fallen. Evidently Grundy hadn’t been
killed by the first shot. Wounded, his
bloodstained trail through the broken
brush showed that he’d crawled some
distance ere having his head crushed
in bya blow from Almighty Voice’s
gun-stock.

All around, the poplars had been
stripped, mute evidence of the suf-
ferings of the trio in the gunpit, and
of their attempts to allay the torments
of thirst and hunger by chewing the
stripped bark. A hundred yards from
the bluff, MacKay came across a
crude crutch and a trail of broken
glass. On that first night Almighty
Voice had attempted to escape, but
had been driven back by the vigilance
of the Mounties and the wound in his
ankle from the bullet of Raven’s
revolver.
