Present at the conference were Mr. W.L.B. Hawker, District Superintendent of Schools; Mr. A.J. Brummet, Supervisor of Elementary Education: Mrs. Helen Robinson, Secretary- Treasurer of School District # 87; and all teachers from the school district. In addition to the Cassiar teaching staff, the other teachers came from Atlin, Lower Post, Telegraph Creek, Good Hope Lake and Mile 48, Haines Road. There were also two visiting teachers from the Fort Nelson district. Topics covered during the conference were the manner in which education was changing in the province and how local teachers should try to keep up with trends and changes; an explanation on the School District office and how it functioned; and how a teacher might draw more from a student by planned questioning rather than by straight teaching. A question and discussion session was also held, during which Mr. Hawker and Mr. Brummet tried to answer the questions of the local staffs. One of the Cassiar teaching staff, Mrs. K. Clark, spoke on teaching Indian children. The business meeting of the local Association was held on Saturday morning. The conference also had its social side. On Friday evening those at the conference, together with other invited guests, attended a cocktail party and banquet. The thanks of the local teachers are extended to the School Board for making the conference and workshop possible, and to Cassiar Asbestos Corporation for their part in the arrangements.
