Over The Edge Page 10 | February 9, 1998 What’s Up With The Gym???? By Jeremy Fung As the student population at UNBC continues to grow, the ratio to gym space continues to shrink. Students are becoming frustrated with the staff of the fitness center, however, they are not responsible for the lack of space. Jim O'Meara, the UNBC Sports Intramural Coordinator, is responsible for setting the budget within the fitness center, but this budget is not the multi-million dollar budget necessary to build a new building. The budget he is working with is much smaller, it goes towards maintenance of the equip- ment, paying staff, putting on classes, and supporting the basketball teams. O’Meara says that for the past few years they have been saving a part of their budget to sup- port some clubs as they struggle to become recog- nized teams. Another part of this fund went to the purchase of the brand new treadmill. This $8000.00 piece of equipment is set up near the weight room, and users can book times for the treadmill in the same way they book any equipment there. Unfortunately, within the cur- rent space there is only room to add one more treadmill. If this first one is put to heavy use a second will be pur- chased during the summer. According to Godfrey Medhurst, director of facili- ties, the original plan for the University included no gym at all. He says that the current plan includes three phases and a “bonus” stage. Of the three stages, the addition of a gym is the first step. The new gym will be located where the volleyball courts currently are. After the new gym is built, the current fitness cen- ter will move into its own building. Phase two regards changing the current fitness center into classrooms, and moving all the furnishings from the first floor of the library building to where the Protest March from page 3... that! Other important issues were brought to public attention in addition to the ICLR though. Students fought for the elimi- nation of student user fees which include computer fees and daycare. Canada’s refusal to join the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which _ is a union of more then 20 countries from all over the world that do not charge their students any tuition whatso- ever; was brought into public attention as well. The Canadian Federation of Students has done a great deal of research into this pro- ject entirely for your benefit. | can't possibly stress how y! pick J a * very important it is that you as students become informed because it is only you who can help make the difference to your education. Phase three will knock down all the walls in the bottom floor of the library. It was designed with this in mind and the walls there are easily removed. Once this is com- pleted the library stacks will expand down to include the first floor. When the project for the new gym was being created, the. University Planning Committee projected a bud- get. This 16 million dollar pro- posal included: three full bas- ketball courts, spectator seat- ing for between 1200 and 2000 people, a climbing wall, and even an enclosed jog- ging track on the second floor. The bonus stage mentioned earlier is the addition of anew lab building. This building would attach to the current lab building. It would either be touching the current building or across the road beside the first residence. In addition, there are plans to expand the parking lot to double the cur- rent parking capacity. 2.6 mil- lion dollars will need to be spent for this also. According to President Jago, this expansion project remains top priority. The next step is to get an-“amber light” from the government. Jago suggests that this “light” will come in the form of planning money. He has been strongly fighting the freeze on building capital imposed by the gov- ernment. He is going to make a proposal to the government for more funding. Other fund- ing will come from corporate sponsors. Once the government has committed, Jago believes the building will be completed within three years. Unfortunately for most cur- rent students this means the earliest the gym could be completed will be the year 2001. Jago did point out that it will be an excellent turn of the century project for this university.
