Looking across the hole, from upper tim, at Crombie’s Ranch on the Fraser at Big Bac. ing the upper edge to the narrow canyon far below that drains the re- gion, it is about half a mile horizont- ally and over a thousand feet vertic- ally. Circular in shape, the Hole appears to have been eroded from part of Big Bar Mountain, which here extends close to the river. Some leaching of soluble earths may have had a part in forming this miniature badlands, as well as erosion by the high winds which sometimes blow through the river valley with almost hurricane force. However it may have been formed, it is certainly a weird sight today. A somewhat sketchy horse trail leads around it, and is used by cattle- men to ride from the ranges along the river benches to those which cover the top of Big Bar Mountain, which is more of a plateau than a mountain. The most prominent of these is Razor Ridge, so-called because its summit is only a foot or so wide throughout its half- mile length, except for one spot about 20 feet long, where it widens to eight or 10 feet. In the centre of this the Provincial Topographic Survey have set a brass plate to mark one of their stations used to survey the river. The Organ Pipes Proceeding up the valley one ap- proaches a prominent and unique formation locally known as the Organ Pipes, or the Cathedral. This is a mountain north of Crow’s Bar, the whole face of which, on the south and west sides, has been eroded into a series of vertical columns, giving it the appearance of a gigantic set of organ pipes for a mighty cathedral. They extend around the mountain for well over two miles, and are over a thou- sand feet high at the southeast end, sloping down gradually to six or seven LANG’S DRUGS Prescription Specialists —TWO STORES— GIBSONS and SECHELT Phone 29 Phone 52 SSS | W.
