These have black loam soil, with clay loam on the uplands and gravelly soil on the ridges and hill;slopes. The Quesnel—Prince George Road will cut through this area. At White’s Landing on the Fraser and 5 miles from Strathnaver the late Duke of Sutherland established a farm some years ago and a fair amount of land was brought under cultivation. Northward are rolling benches lightly timbered, rising to rolling timbered uplands and sloping again to more broken country east of the surveyed area. Woodpecker Island Land Settlement Area. At Woodpecker Island is a general store which serves some twenty or more families. Some blocks of flat and bench land are held by the Land Settlement Board in this vicinity, the soil being very similar to that near Strathnaver. Stone Creek Pre-emptions. Around Stone Creek the Land Settlement Board has another small block covering river-flats and upland and rolling country. A number of settlers are located on the easterly limits of this tract on surveyed pre- emptions. These lands form part of Area No. 13, established in r921 and comprising some 16,000 acres. FIELD OF OATS, CARIBOO DISTRICT. 5, consisting of 18,773 acres, is located on the east side of the Fraser at Prince George and extends southward, all tracts within it being within 2 miles of a road to Prince George. Additional roads are being constructed as settlement warrants. Some 6,394 acres of this land is available for settlement at the present time. Settlement Area No. 5
