oven THE EDGE NEWSPAPER. OCTOBER 27 , 2006 T I4 E PG M U Ss | C S C E N E 19 Pox Eclipse ’ Artist/ Band name: Pox Eclipse Genre/style: Alt/Hard rock Members and instruments: Nik Holm (guitar), Mike Rockstar (vocals and guitar), Cal Hilde (bass) and Lan- don Hilde (drums). Day jobs: Super heroes and bank rob- bers. Year formed: 2005 Discography: We have an EP out. Label: not signed, yet. Influences: Cal: I try to play my instrument like I Mother Earth, Our Lady Peace, Rage Against the Machine.,,it all combines together to rock. Nik: Grunge, anything from Seattle. Right now I'm into Coheed and Cam- bria. Oh, and the Munchkin song is fucking brilliant. The influences change quite often. Best part of being in a band: Nik: It's a totally different friendship with everybody, It’s always conflicting, but it’s a building friendship. The best part of being in a band is the drama. Cal: Either playing live, or writing new songs. Those are the two that I find tobe the most fun. I love the writing process and playing new things, and I love play- ing live. Worst part of being in a band: Trying to balance band and school. Time manage- ment is really hard. Also when none of us agree on something, but we compromise on that. We meet in the middle. Biggest problem (for the band): The time that arguing takes up is the worst part. We're not a full-time band. We're full-time students in a part-time band. Favourite band memory: The Social Code show was fun, because people were moshing for us, and we got paid. Also the way we got started. We were hav- ing a rock star party and everyone came dressed up as rock stars. Nik and Mike were talking about how they wanted to start a band, and Cal jumped in with the fact that he played bass guitar. If you tour, what do you listen to on the road? We would all have our separate music, but if we were to come to a mid- dle ground on something it would be Audioslave. We would take turns, too. We wouldnt listen to the Killers. If you could open for any artist in the world, living or:dead, who would it be: Elvis, just’ so. we could out-rock him. Audioslave, Queens of the Stone Age, Foo Fighters... Best. place to perform: One of those huge festivals in Europe at one of those castles; that or a really small venue in New York. We love playing so much that it would be cool to play anywhere. What are you listening to, reading, or watching right now (books, movies, vid- eogames, sports, hobbies, etc): Nik: I just bought the new Mars Volta CD and I’m going to buy a bottle of wine and listen to it. What more do you need? Cal: I'm listening to a lot of acid jazz right now. What's happening right now? We just played a show with Italian Edition,-and were finishing up recording. We also just got buttons. Where can we buy your merchandise-- and what is your coolest merchandise? You can get the merch from us by emailing us, or going to our Myspace, We have t- shirts and buttons now. Who writes the songs, and what do they mean: We all come up with the songs together. Songwriting process: We all play our in- dividual parts, but it's made together. Key songs by you: “Words, “Another State of Mind,’“Come Out to Play,’ and “Glass.” Website: clipse1 Fun facts: Pox Eclipse has the un- canny ability to melt faces through the power of our rock and roll. It has to do with sound waves. Unfortunately they unleashed this power on a couple once and they poor lovebirds got their faces melted. That, and there's a song that Nik plays, every band practice, which is about Keira Knightly, but it's secretly about Cal. It's complicated, Also, we recorded. a song in 16/12" time. Our drummer is so amazing that we he can play anything, but we can't record it. And Mike wont let us play it. Which local artists do you think should have more publicity? All local artists need. more. It's nice that they do the one song every Wednesday, but there needs to be more than that. What do you think is the best CD/ tape/song/etc made by a_local band other than you (ever)? Richard Krueger's stuff is really amazing, Ryan Wugalter’s new stuff is pretty great, too. Cal: Mike, you're fired and out of the band. www.myspace.com/poxe- Fatal if Swallowe Artist/ Band name: Fatal if Swal- lowed Genre/style: Punk rock Members and instruments: Sam (guitar and vocals), Matt (bass), Lloyd (guitar and vocals), and Chester (drums). Day jobs: Synovate and ACS Year formed: The original line-up was in 2003, but the current one is quite new. Discography: a few EPs and some live DVDs Label: none, yet. How you got started: It was just some- thing to do. We were sixteen or seven- teen at the time. Best part of being in a band: Rocking, playing shows, the fans, too. Worst part of being in a band: not be- ing signed and working for nothing. It's still fun, but we're trying to make it, and we have to do this all ourselves. It's not like we have a label or anything working for us. Biggest problem (for the band): The funding and financing. Also, people who don’t show up to jam. Favourite band memory: it was out first show ever back with Fatal if Swallowed when we first started. And our show got cancelled so we set up in front of the Foodteller building and played for three hours. There was an entire crowd of people standing around, watching us place, and then we got shut down by the cops. Also, when we played with DOA. If you tour, what do you listen to on the road? Gunsn Roses, Motley Crue, Alice Cooper, Rancid, The Ramones, Sex Pis- tols, GWAR... If you could open for any artist in the world, living or dead, who would it be: The Ramones, or Rancid. Best place to perform: The Generator, in Prince George. Liquid Lounge in Al- berta. What are you listening to, reading, or watching right now (books, movies, vid- eogames, sports, hobbies, etc): The Clash, and the Distillers. What's happening right now? We have a radio show Sundays at 2pm at CFUR. We mail a lot of demos out and are al- ways trying to book a new location and show. Future plans: We're going to be record- ing soon. Where can we buy your merchandise- - and what is your coolest merchandise? Were getting patches soon, and you can get our stuff by contacting us through our Myspace. Band motto: Lock up your daughters! Who writes the songs, and what do they mean: We all write the songs. Songwriting process: One of us will come in and say “hey, I have this.new riff” and we'll work on that. It’s whoever comes in with a song. We try not to write about the same crap all the time. What song do you wish you wrote? “Brad Logan” by Rancid. Key songs by you: “That's OK,’ and “Wrongly Motivated.” Website: ww.myspace.com/fatalifswal- lowed Fun facts: We played in a barn once, with a big deer head in the back of the barn. We played at Sound Entertain- ment once, and there wasn't enough people there so we were told not to play, but we played anyway, because the people had already played. Also we've gone Moron Sighting in Hundred Mile. It’s where you watch people do stupid things and a lady thought we were in a soccer team. I mean, were wearing studded leather jackets, and a Mohawk. What kind of soccer team is that? Which local artists do you think should have more publicity? Ceremony is pretty good. They're really talented and no one really appreciates them. ~ What do you think is the best CD/tape/ song/etc made by a local band other than you (ever)?
