-ers something of her life. It appears she was married, but estranged from her husband. Once in a while, they met for a day or so and then parted again to lead their own separate lives. The husband was soon under deten- rion, and finally admitted he had been in the hotel the night before with his wife, but early in the morn- ing he had smothered her with a pillow and then quietly left the hotel. This was straight common- sense investigation, yet if the medical examiner had not been so thorough it might have been another unex- plained death, because what prompted him to look at the pillows were tiny hemorrhages in the corners of the victimy’s eyes, a sign of suffocation. A few hours more and these signs could not have been detected. Scientific knowledge plus common sense tri- umphed. This is only one of many cases discussed and illustrated with pho- tographs and slides. Many examples are given of homicides which appear te be natural deaths, while other ex- amples are discussed where an ob- vious homicide proves to be a case of accidental death. Simulated suicide and suicide appearing to be murder are also shown in their true colors if properly investigated. Modern complexity of life re- quires that every profession keeps up with the times. But those charged with law-enforcement must not only keep abreast of modern trends, they must forge ahead, otherwise they wage a losing battle with the forces of the underworld. Now, it is only fair to ask how did such a department come to be cre- ated, and by whom? ‘The story goes back a few years. One would expect that the ‘‘power behind the throne” of a criminal research department and laboratory of a great university, would be a large, aggressive man of over-powering personality.
